Flowers and friends
As executive sous chef at Hyatt Regency Waikiki, Ricky Oshima is no stranger to stress. Night after night, he oversees a staff of 60 for the hotel's three restaurants -- Colony, Ciao Mein and Musashi -- and handles banquet duties as well. So it's high priority for Oshima to devote time to relaxation.
But for the high-energy man, that doesn't mean sleeping the day away or vegging out in front of a television. Instead, he plays tennis, creates art and continues to cultivate his skill in photography.

"Whenever I go out, I carry a camera," Oshima says. "If I feel good, I take pictures. I love photography."
One of Oshima's favorite things to shoot is nature.
"Hawaii is very special. We're surrounded by nature here, so I try to take advantage of that," he says. "I like shooting 'backyard' flowers, the kind of flower that's not considered special, the common flowers. And I like some other kind of life on the flowers -- flowers and friends. That makes a more active picture."
Ricky Oshima was able to capture the tiny, fast-moving mejiro bird at Koko Crater Botanical Garden, in the photograph above.
Oshima visited the Ala Wai community garden and Koko Crater Botanical Garden to capture these shots.
We'll be sharing more of Oshima's work on future "Portfolio" pages.
