An evening made for
the Aloha Maids

BIG ISLAND folks got the thrill of a lifetime the other night. At the Na Mele Hawaii Concert at the Kahilu Theater, Kumu Hula Michael Pili Pang of Halau Hula Kai No'eau and Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame music director Kahauanu Lake found themselves at a loss for words when five women walked in on their rehearsal and told the co-directors they were ready to rehearse their number. The unexpected ladies were Ray Kinney's original "Aloha Maids" who performed with Kinney at the Lexington Hotel's Hawaiian Room during the 1940s. Dancing together for the first time in 60 yeas to honor their pal and former boss Kinney, 2002 inductee into the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame were Betty Makia of New York, Lulika Ampey of Arizona, Teela Hailele from Waimea, Edna Kihoi-Kwock of California and Kamoa Ferris of Michigan. Chicken skin, as you may imagine, was rampant ...

FORMER Massachusetts resident Dave Harrington, a familiar waterfront figure, is still scratching his shaven head: "The world is upside down," Harrington notes. "Not only does Massachusetts elect a Republican governor, so does Hawaii, and a lady, at that." He ventured off into other areas: "This is at the same time that the most successful golfer is black (Tiger Woods) and the best selling rapper is white (Eminem.) Go figure! ...

Bostock in trade

ENGLISHMAN Tim Bostock couldn't figure out why those around him were laughing at his "early bird specials" to the "LUMA" show at the Hawaii Theater. It runs until Thanksgiving -- "Turkey Day." ... Bostock is a busy young man. He's also showing a late-night cabaret at the Arts at Marks Garage, "Singing Sondheim," running only three nights, Nov. 21 to 23. Singing numbers from various Sondheim musicals will be the lovely Katie Leiva, Shari Lynn, Andrew Meader and Darren Server, all familiar figures to isle theater-goers, with Melina Mellios ...

FOR those who like to plan ahead, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, who were so hilarious together on the Carol Burnett TV show, will perform one show only, Jan. 4 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall ... Toys for Tots is holding its statewide kickoff tomorrow at Pearlridge Center Court from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Performing will be Halau Hula Olana, Ellsworth Simeona and Kapena. Those attending are urged to bring an upwrapped toy for kids ...

SLACK-key guitarist Keola Beamer will be teaming up with the Honolulu Symphony Pops series for two nights of Hawaiian music and dance Nov. 15 and 16 at the Blaisdell Concert Hall. As an added attraction, Beamer has talked singer Ulawehi Guerrero to open the show ...

Feast of feasts

YOU'LL have to scratch far and wide to find a Thanksgiving Day spread to match that which the Ko Olina Community Association is proving for homeless, low income and single-parent families along the Leeward Coast Nov. 23. Some 3,500 meals will be prepared in 18 different locations and the amount of food provided is monumental: 2,200 pounds of turkey, 600 pounds of ham, 700 pounds of rice, 100 gallons of gravy, 450 pounds of corn, 3,500 rolls and 350 pumpkin pies ...
