Gen. Shinseki to attend
Army command changeArmy Chief of Staff Gen. Eric Shinseki is scheduled to attend tomorrow's U.S. Army Pacific change of command, when Lt. Gen. James L. Campbell formally replaces Lt. Gen. Edwin P. Smith. The Palm Circle at Fort Shafter ceremony also will mark Smith's retirement.
Campbell served as the commanding general of the 10th Mountain Division (Light) at Fort Drum in New York before coming to Hawaii in December. He has served in Hawaii on several other occasions, including from 1984 to 1989, during which time he commanded the 4th Battalion, 27th Infantry (Wolfhounds), at Schofield Barracks. From 1996 to 1999, Campbell headed Joint Task Force Full Accounting at Camp Smith and then was the 25th Division's assistant commander.
The Pearl Harbor-based nuclear attack submarine USS Columbia will be part of the aircraft carrier USS Constellation battle group, which set sail for the Northern Arabia Sea yesterday. The Constellation is expected to arrive in the area in December at the same time the nuclear carrier USS George Washington is scheduled to return. If the Washington's deployment is extended and if the USS Harry Truman is deployed early to the region, the Pentagon could have three carriers on site for a war on Iraq in December. Also available would be the USS Kitty Hawk, which left its port in Japan last week.
