Rainbows impressive in
Big West swimming meet


The Hawaii men's swimming team advanced in the winners bracket yesterday heading into the final day of the Big West Shootout at UC Irvine.

UH got past Washington, Denver and UNLV, and set a Shootout record in the 200 medley relay (1:31.82) -- only to watch UC Santa Barbara break the mark moments later.

Cheyne Bloch won two events (50, 100) and Peter Thew (100 back), Tudor Ignat (100 breast) and Nimrod Palma (200 fly) also posted wins.

The Wahine fell to the consolation bracket after losing to Washington and UNLV.

Hanalani graduate honored in soccer

Bethany Nishimoto, a 2001 graduate from Hanalani, has been named the NAIA National Player of the Week and the NAIA Region IV women's soccer player of the week for Oct. 21-27.

The Aiea resident, a sophomore at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, recorded hat tricks in a 7-0 win over Mount Marty and a 4-1 victory over Doane as the Lady Defenders clinched its first Great Plains Athletic Conference title with a 10-0 record.

Rams seeking football coach

Radford High School is accepting applications for the position of head football coach.

Radford coach Kelly Sur stepped down after the Rams finished 3-5 and 2-5 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association's West Red Conference this season.
