Democrat Mazie Hirono received a flood of big contributions -- including $47,000 from nine carpenters union organizations nationwide -- in the closing days of her campaign to become Hawaii's first woman governor, according to final reports filed yesterday with the state Campaign Spending Commission.

Republican Linda Lingle's final haul trailed Hirono's take, but Lingle's total contributions during the election period still exceed Hirono's 2-to-1.

Hirono's campaign organization reported 223 contributions totaling $538,178 in the period from Oct. 21 through Thursday, an average of more than $2,400 for each contribution.

It would put her total contributions in the election period at $2.2 million.

Lingle's campaign reported gaining $380,254 from 236 contributions, for an average of just more than $1,600.

Notable in Lingle's contributions were $4,200 from Tesoro Hawaii, $2,000 from ChevronTexico Corp. and $3,000 from Aventis Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Hirono's campaign has attacked Lingle's opposition to the new state laws to cap gasoline prices and reduce the prescription drug prices.

The final 10 days of contributions put Lingle's total take at nearly $4.5 million.
