Windward Community College celebrated its 30th anniversary today with the dedication of its new campus center and the investiture of its new provost, Angela Meixell.

"This is a time of wonderful growth and change for us," Meixell said earlier this week. "We have beautiful new facilities as well as high community interest and support. This latest new building will be a great gathering place for everyone."

After 30 years, the college has finally had its first full-service cafeteria, just one of the features of Hale Akoakoa, the campus center.

Culinary arts students from the Employment Training Center staff the new cafeteria, which has been open to the public since July (7 a.m. to 3 p.m, Monday through Thursday, and 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday).

The 40,000-square-foot building also features community meeting rooms, a bookstore, student services, offices for student services organizations and a lounge and game room.

A 200-person-capacity multipurpose room and smaller meeting rooms are available for community gatherings, workshops and business retreats.

The center is one of several other new facilities at the college, including the Imaginarium, Paliku Theatre and Gallery Iolani.

At a Hale Akoakoa ceremony scheduled for late this afternoon to honor Meixell, speakers were to include University of Hawaii President Evan Dobelle, UH community college chancellor Joyce Tsunoda and Herb Lee, former president of the Kaneohe Business Group and WCC advisory board member.
