Some stickers have been distributed through Oahu public schools. They also are available to the public at satellite city halls.
Mayor Jeremy Harris proclaimed tomorrow "Be Safe, Be Seen" Halloween Pedestrian Safety Day.
National studies have shown that wearing reflective stickers greatly increases the visibility of pedestrians at night. About 60,000 stickers were distributed to public school students in the second to fifth grades in a program sponsored by the city Department of Transportation Services.
The Honolulu Police Department has also issued the following safety tips for Halloween activities:
Choosing a costume:
>> Choose a light-colored costume or add reflective tape to enhance visibility. Take a flashlight.>> Consider using makeup instead of a mask for unhindered vision. If a child does wear a mask, cut the eyeholes larger.
>> Don't carry sharp or pointed objects as costume props.
>> To prevent tripping, avoid poorly fitting shoes, high heels and costumes that are too long.
Trick-or-Treating:
>> Young children should be accompanied by an adult, and older children should go out in groups.>> Visit neighborhoods that you are familiar with and designate a route ahead of time.
>> Only go to homes that have their front lights on, and never enter homes or cars of strangers to get candy or other treats.
>> Stay on the sidewalks and look out for cars going in and out of driveways. When crossing streets, use the crosswalks, and don't walk out between parked cars.
After trick-or-treating:
>> Parents should inspect the candy before their children eat it. Items that are not properly sealed or have been tampered with should not be eaten. Anyone finding suspicious or dangerous items should call 911 immediately.
