Election 2002

[ STATE HOUSE ]

24

Manoa

Kirk W. Caldwell

Democrat

Age: 49 Job: Attorney Past: Congressional assistant; Manoa Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

As someone born and raised in Hawaii, who worked in Washington for Sen. Inouye, clerked for Hawaii Chief Justice William Richardson and House Majority Leader Russell Blair, and has 18 years in private legal practice, I can hit the ground running and make a difference for Manoa.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

Increase school autonomy and accountability. Increase support for teachers, including competitive salaries, benefits and continuing education. Increase parents' involvement and sense of ownership in our schools. I would pay for this by seeking greater efficiency in the system and by developing public-private partnerships.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?

Make government more efficient and eliminate waste where it exists. Your representative should work with government on all levels to look for ways to help business prosper and continue to protect the public interest.

Nadine Nishioka

Republican

Age: 37 Job: International communication consultant Past: Board, Manoa Girls' Athletic Club

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

As a fourth-generation resident of Manoa, I understand that education, the environment, business and family are integral parts of a balanced community. It is my intent to address these concerns and work with our community and legislative leaders to provide a strong foundation for future generations.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

Decentralize our school boards and return it to their respective communities. Allocate and expedite appropriate funds to teachers and classrooms in a timely manner. Maintain a support network with teachers and parents to create a positive learning environment.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?

We need to create a strong economic foundation for Hawaii's future by utilizing the power of our local industries through local and international marketing. Evaluate Hawaii's agricultural bases and implement a structured enterprise beneficial to our state.
