Election 2002

[ STATE HOUSE ]

20

St. Louis-Wilhelmina Rise

Wayne W. Gau

Republican

Age: 54 Job: Clergyman, teacher, historian Past: Member, Diamond Head-Neighborhood Board

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

My training and experience as a clergyman in dealing with people's problems and concerns, my knowledge of historical trends in Hawaii's past and my background as a teacher make me well qualified to deal with this state's current problems.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

Substitute county-level school boards for the present statewide school board, allow liberal arts majors to teach without requiring them to undergo costly and time-consuming retraining in education courses, and cut costs by trimming the DOE's administrative bureaucracy so that public libraries can get more books.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?

Allow the private sector to diversify the economy rather than continue allowing government to put all the eggs in the one basket of one or two favored industries. Government should confine itself to law enforcement, the maintenance of public parks and lands, and improving public transportation and education.

Calvin K.Y. Say

Democrat

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

First and foremost is my years of experience in state government and also having an occupation in the private sector. I also bring to the office stability and continuity the operations of state government.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

Support our teachers and administrators in looking and researching other creative ideas. Probably consider raising taxes, consider gaming.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?

Address leasehold reform for commercial and industrial properties.
