Election 2002

[ STATE HOUSE ]

19

Diamond Head

Barbara C. Marumoto

Republican

Age: 61 Job: State representative Past: Delegate, 1978 Constitutional Convention; board, HUGS

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

Vision, experience and a strong moral compass are necessary components for a good legislator. One must continuously direct the state toward an economically strong and self-sufficient viability. Legislative experience teaches us to achieve our goals. A strong and honest heart allows legislators to vote their conscience.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

Local school boards, charter schools, greater parental involvement and smaller schools will improve the quality of public education. Smaller "schools-within-schools" can offer students a choice in teaching methods and curricula. Legislators must have the commitment to support both higher and lower education.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?

The business community must have confidence that the Legislature will not pull the rug from under them by radically amending laws from year to year. If business owners make a commitment to locate, expand or stay in Hawaii, legislators must appreciate that commitment.

Brian Yamane

Democrat

Age: 55 Job: Insurance agent Past: Former state representative; Diamond Head Lions

What qualifies you to be a state representative?

I have successfully authored legislation and worked with both representatives and senators to see the legislation become law. I believe I can be an effective voice for the community. My family and I have long been active members of the district.

How would you improve Hawaii's public schools, and how would you pay for it?

We need to provide more facilities, a safer and more comfortable learning environment, and more resources to our teachers and students. An audit of expenses is needed to see how the current money is being spent. We need to increase cooperation between public schools and private industry as well.

What, if anything, should be done to improve Hawaii's business climate?
