[ OFFICE OF HAWAIIAN AFFAIRS ]

George Manulani Kaimiola

Age: 36 Job: Self-employed lecturer on Hawaiian history Past: Volunteer with the Maui Historical Society

What makes you qualified to be an OHA trustee?

I feel what makes me qualified to be a trustee is the fact that I have listened to the Hawaiian community and understand what they want from OHA and that is what I want for them.

What is the biggest problem facing Hawaiians, and what can OHA do about it?

Financial stress is destroying the Hawaiian family. We need to be getting the benefits to the beneficiaries. I believe if OHA had been doing this, Hawaiians would be enjoying a higher standard of living. Also, the lawsuits against them would not have manifested because of all the resources that would be released into the community ...

Do you support passage of the Akaka bill in Congress, which gives Hawaiians a process toward federal recognition similar to that granted Native Americans?

I support the Akaka bill only as a form of interim government until the full reinstatement of the kingdom is established. To me, anything less than total restoration of the kingdom is unacceptable. It is like someone stealing a $100 from you then apologizing and then giving you back $20 and forcing you to accept it.

Boyd P. Mossman

Age: 59 Job: Practicing mediator/arbitrator Past: Retired Circuit Court judge; ex-deputy attorney general

What makes you qualified to be an OHA trustee?

My education, experience, and example as reflected above combined with my Hawaiian ancestry and determination to continue serving Hawaii's people by helping the Hawaiian people.

What is the biggest problem facing Hawaiians, and what can OHA do about it?

The attack against Hawaiian entitlements and their potential loss could take from Hawaiians the little they have left as well as the Hawaiian culture itself. 1.) defend in the courts, 2.) seek passage of the Akaka bill, 3.) propose revision should it not pass this year, 4.) present united front.

Do you support passage of the Akaka bill in Congress, which gives Hawaiians a process toward federal recognition similar to that granted Native Americans?

Yes with some reservation. If it does not pass, what good is it? OHA needs to seek passage through a combination of political strategy and innovative modifications.
