Election 2002

[ U.S. HOUSE ]

2

Rural Oahu -- Neighbor Isle

Lloyd Jeffrey Mallan

Libertarian

Age: 58 Job: President, Artful Expressions Past: Master's, Carnegie-Mellon University; U.S. Peace Corps

What makes you qualified to serve in Congress?

I am a Libertarian. That is the best reason.

What can Congress do to stimulate the U.S. economy?

Stabilize U.S. currency. Abolish the Federal Reserve System with its inflationary policies based on paper. Re-establish the gold standard or put in place another accepted standard, removing the concept that faith in government itself establishes value. Stop spending on war and other police state measures. Increase tax cuts. Privatize services.

What can Congress do to protect Hawaii and the rest of the nation from terrorist attacks?

Stop the war. Remove the illegal, interventionist and repressive policies of the Bush administration. Work diplomatically with our Muslim friends to understand the causes of "terrorism." Act respectfully instead of militarily. Discontinue the measures, making all American citizens suspect. Prevent further conditioning by government to prepare its citizens for war.

Bob McDermott

Republican

Age: 39 Job: College instructor Past: State representative; Marine Corps officer, Gulf War veteran

What makes you qualified to serve in Congress?

I have served in the state Legislature for six years. As a former Marine Corps Officer and Gulf War veteran, I know how important the military is to our economy. Accordingly, I will work to increase military spending in Hawaii.

What can Congress do to stimulate the U.S. economy?

Congress can stimulate the Hawaii economy supporting the missile defense program, which will pump hundreds of millions of dollars into our state. This is the only linchpin that we in Hawaii have to anchor a high-technology industry. This will provide good, clean, environmentally friendly jobs.

What can Congress do to protect Hawaii and the rest of the nation from terrorist attacks?

Congress needs to act swiftly and decisively in passing anti-terrorism legislation. Unlike Mrs. Mink, I will support President Bush's effort to root out terrorists wherever they hide. Unlike Mrs. Mink, I condemn terrorism, terrorists and the countries that harbor them.

Patsy T. Mink

Democrat

Pasty Mink is on the ballot for the 2nd district because there was not enough time to remove her name or replace her before her death.

No response:

>> 2nd District: Nicholas Bedworth (Natural Law Party)
