Kauakükalahale
column debuts todayThe Honolulu Star-Bulletin today begins a weekly column in Hawaiian. Titled Kauakükalahale (the rain that announces itself to the roof of every house) it will appear each Sunday on Page A2.
In addition, a redesigned Business section will be introduced tomorrow. It will offer a quicker read of the day's top stories and include new features and statistics. See page E1 for details.
The Hawaiian column will be coordinated by Laiana Wong and Kekeha Solis, of the Department of Hawaiian and Indo-Pacific Languages and Literatures at the University of Hawaiæi at Mänoa. Each column will begin with a synopsis, in English. Topics will include current events, features and profiles.
To honor the Star-Bulletin for beginning the Hawaiian column, Wong has written a "name" song, which used to be customary when a newspaper was established. The song is titled "Ka Hökü Buletina."
Generally speaking, the song is announcing the new publication, "kind of like saying a new kind of flavor for readers -- the Hawaiian language, the heartbeat of the Hawaiian people," Wong said. "Let it be known that this column is coming out and the Star-Bulletin is doing it and we would like you to subscribe," he said. "It's finally here."

Note: Because most Web browsers are unable to display the kahako (horizontal line, or macron) used to add emphasis to a vowel in written Hawaiian, we have substituted the corresponding vowel with an umlaut (two dots, or dieresis). To view this text as it was meant to be read, you must have a Hawaiian-language font installed on your computer. You can obtain free versions of these fonts from the University of Hawaii-Hilo's Web site, http://www.olelo.hawaii.edu/eng/resources/fonts.html
Some newer Web browsers, (such as Netscape 7 and Internet Explorer 6 on certain operating systems) can display kahako without a Hawaiian-language font, using a specialized coding system called Unicode. To jump to a Unicode version of this column, click here.
