1970: Weight of election
mailings slows the post office

METHYL Eugenol, a synthetic chemical now being used to combat Oriental fruit flies in L.A., is old hat to Hans L'Orange, former Oahu Sugar Co. manager. He's been using the stuff for years on mangoes, figs, citrus and papayas grown on his Kamuela and Ewa Beach truck gardens. (Oct. 28, 1969) ... The Post Office blames late mail deliveries on an enormous amount of campaign brochures and mailers they're handling. Just a few more days of that, thank goodness. (Oct. 29, 1970) ...

AUSSIES and horse racing fans alike should be reminded that Monday is Melbourne Cup Day Down Under, the biggest day in racing in Australia. Banks close, shops shutter and all ears are turned to the radio. Locally, Qantas is holding its annual get-together at the Australian Center on Kalakaua where the race will come in by phone and displaced Aussies will moan or cheer, depending on how they did in their pools. (Oct. 29, 1976) ...

BENIHANA owner Rocky Aoki had dinner at the Honolulu Club -- sometimes called by wags Honolulu's 700 Club, since there are reportedly 700 single women members. Aoki, who is a founding director of the club, was having his first look at the completed structure. (Oct. 27, 1980) ...

IN last year's "Top 150 Island Songs" contest on KCCN, "Pua Home" by the Brothers Cazimero was named top recording. This year's winner, as heard on the station yesterday when all 150 songs were played, was "Honolulu City Lights," by Keola & Kapono Beamer, not much of a surprise. (Nov. 2, 1980) ...

IT wasn't until after they were printed that Bob and Nora Yarnell discovered that fliers for their annual Halloween haunted house plugged an appearance by "The Abdominal Snow Monster." Rather than change the copy, Bob asked Nora to create a "special stomach" for the monster that would qualify as both abominable and abdominal, thus satisfying everyone. (Nov. 2, 1981) ...

HALLOWEEN is the favorite day of the year for many people. They dress up outrageously, wear far-out makeup and generally have a ball. It used to be just for kids, but not anymore -- adults seem to enjoy the battiness (if I can coin a pun) of it all, and if you don't believe me you can see for yourselves by checking out the downtown block party at Merchant Square this evening or cruising by the Kuhio District near Hula's. (Oct. 31, 1983) ...

INVESTMENT advisor Ron Kent, telling reporters about his new Leahi tax-free income trust fund, mentioned that he's keeping his hand in woodcarving as well. One of his works appears in the American Craft Museum's 1988 calendar for January. One person recollected that Kent used to turn out wooden eggs as well. "I still do the eggs," said Kent, to which a wag corrected, "You mean you still lathe the eggs." Ouch, said Kent. (Nov. 3, 1987) ...

SOUNDS like a night I would have enjoyed: After being crowned Miss Hawaii USA (as I predicted to her), Heather Hays and an entourage headed to the Black Orchid to celebrate. Among those on hand were Julie Larson Taylor, who is Mrs. Hawaii, and former Miss Texas Susan Page, who's in charge of the entire Miss Hawaii USA pageant ... Then there's former Miss Hawaii, now Miss America, Carolyn Sapp. During her stay here after being crowned, she and some girlfriends did the town. Joined by photog Mary Ann Changg, Nadine Tanega (Miss Hawaii International 1991) and a former Miss Honolulu, Angela Pratt, they brightened the scene at various discos by limo, escorted by two bodyguards. While in the VIP room at Maharaja, Sapp was told that the daughter of Aristotle Onassis wanted to meet her. "She wants to meet me?" quipped Sapp, who obviously isn't used to her celebrity status yet. (Oct. 29, 1991) ...

CHARO, who lives on Kauai and owns a restaurant in Hanalei, finally rented her long-empty Beverly Hills house, to actor Joe Pesci. Small wonder it took so long to lease out -- Pesci's paying a reported $12,000 a month for the eight-bedroom, Mediterranean estate bought when Charo was married to Xavier Cugat. (Oct. 27, 1992)
