when to do Makapuu work

Waimanalo residents can tell state Department of Transportation officials Monday whether they want rockfall prevention work on Makapuu Point to begin earlier than February.

The state will hold an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday at the Waimanalo Library to discuss the $1.3 million project and get comments from community, said Highways Administrator Glenn Yasui.

Royal Contracting Co. has a contract to do the work along 900 feet of the Kalanianaole Highway near Makapuu Beach Park.

Vice President Leonard Leong said the company could begin the work sooner than the scheduled February start date, if directed to do so by the state.

Yasui said the earliest the work could begin would be sometime in November. Exactly when the work is done and how many hours a day the road is closed will depend on what Waimanalo residents want, he said.
