Quakers hold sessions to educate outsiders
A Honolulu workshop next week will offer outsiders an insight into Quakers' historical involvement in peace movements and social justice causes."Being a Quaker in difficult times: an activist looks at the mystical and mundane," will be the theme of sessions that will open Friday at the Honolulu Friends Meeting House, 2426 Oahu Ave.
sThe speaker will be Laura Magnani, program director for justice and youth at American Friends Service Committee in Oakland, Calif.
The workshop is free and open to the public. Each session is self-contained:
>> Friday, 7 to 9 p.m. -- Experiences and interpretations of Quaker mysticism, based on the belief that individuals have the direct experience of the Spirit moving within."Quakers have had a peace testimony for 350 years," said Tom Huff of the Honolulu meeting.>> Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon -- "Criminal justice and how faith applies in effecting justice".
>> Sunday, 2 to 4:30 p.m. -- An open forum will focus on current issues, with attention to living out non-violent witness in modern times.
Huff said the religion's founder George Fox was a conscientious objector in his day, refusing to be a combatant in the religion-based strife in mid-17th Century England.

Oahu Civic Orchestra plays classical music
The Oahu Civic Orchestra will present a program of classical music in a free concert in east Honolulu.The Church of the Holy Nativity, at 5286 Kalanianaole Highway, will host the performance at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 4.
The 45-member orchestra, directed by Paul Barrett, will perform Claude Debussy's "Petite Suite," Edvard Grieg's "Peer Gynt Suite," Igor Stravinsky's "Suite No. 1" and Peter Tchaikovsky's "Swan Lake Suites."
Scholarships offered for organ lessons
Scholarships that will pay half the cost of organ lessons are available to full-time students under the age of 25.The grants, offered by the American Guild of Organists, Hawaii chapter, will cover lessons from January through June.
Nov. 9 is the deadline for applications. Auditions and interviews will be held Nov. 16. Call Ruth Urben, 623-5140.
'Kilohana Varieties' features uke master
Ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro will be the featured artist at a Nov. 3 concert in Niu Valley."Kilohana Varieties" at Kilohana United Methodist Church, 5829 Mahimahi St., will also present harmonizing by the Skylarks and the Pacific Trades barbershop quartets.
The 7 p.m. concert will raise funds for the Rita Thompson Music Scholarship for Instrumentalists. Donations of $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and younger are requested.
The annual scholarship is open to students throughout the community. Call 373-3373 for information.
Pali View Baptist gives grief counseling
Pali View Baptist Church will offer a grief counseling seminar at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 3.The Rev. Glen Harada, an ordained minister and licensed social worker, will speak at the free workshop at the church at 45-510 Halekou Road.
The church opened its Caring Center earlier this year, providing help by trained Christian counselors. The facility was funded by grants from the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation, the Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, the Mary D. and Walter F. Frear Eleemosynary Trust and the Atherton Family Foundation.

'12 Angry Women' play set at Sacred Hearts
The Sacred Hearts Thespian Troupe will perform its gender-adapted play of drama within a jury room in performances next week at the Kaimuki school.Students of the all-girl school will star in "Twelve Angry Women," an adaptation of the "Twelve Angry Men" screenplay by Reginald Rose, in shows at 4 p.m. Thursday and 8 p.m. Friday and next Saturday. Lloyd Wood is the director and Margaret-Helen Wood is artistic director.
Tickets at $3 are available at the door of the auditorium at 3253 Waialae Ave.
