Motorcade jams traffic

Scores of morning commuters were stuck on Nimitz Highway today while Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's motorcade brought traffic in the area to a standstill for about 30 minutes.

Some drivers got out of their cars to stretch as they waited for the motorcade to pass by while others tried to take shortcuts through the side streets, only to find traffic was backed up there also.

Police said the president's arrival also affected east-bound traffic on the H-1 Freeway near the viaduct as her motorcade made its way from the freeway to Nimitz.

A traffic accident near the Middle Street tunnel and a stalled vehicle near the Likelike Highway offramp added to the delay.

Police caution motorists to expect traffic delays about the same time on Friday, the day of Arroyo's departure.
