BYUH dropped on road
by Western New Mexico


Western New Mexico stunned No. 4 Brigham Young-Hawaii in women's volleyball last night in Silver City, N.M.

WNM won the nonconference match 30-27, 30-28, 20-30, 18-30, 15-12.

Western New Mexico (15-11) is still looking for its first conference win. The Mustangs are 0-7 in the Pac West. The Seasiders (17-2) remain atop the Pacific West Conference with a 6-1 record.

Chun Yi Lin had a match-high 27 kills and hit .346. Yu Chuan Weng tied the school match record with 33 digs and also added 23 kills.

The Seasiders set a school record with 146 digs.

Kim Tano led WNM with 20 kills and 13 digs.

BYUH had handled Western New Mexico with relative ease on Monday night, winning in three games.

BYUH receivied three first-place votes in the latest AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 Poll, released yesterday -- but will most likely drop after losing to Western New Mexico.

Silverswords lose, too: Chaminade fell to Montana State Billings 30-26, 30-20, 34-32 in Billings, Mont.

MSUB needed four match points in the final game to secure the victory.

PacWest Player of the Week Kahala Kabalis led the Silverswords (14-4, 6-2) with 17 kills and eight digs. Valasi Sepulona had a match-high 20 digs and added eight kills.

The Yellowjackets improved to 7-13, 2-5.

Chaminade next plays at McCabe Gym on Nov. 1 against Hawaii Pacific.

UH golf team finishes last

The Hawaii men's golf team scored its best round of the tournament yesterday, but still finished in last place at the Barona Collegiate Cup in Lakeside, Calif.

UH shot a 295 yesterday, led by sophomore Ben Douglas. Douglas fired an even-par 72 to tie for 39th place with a 219.

Junior Manarii Gauthier tied for 61st with a 223 total.

The Warriors closed with an 894 team total, six shots behind 16th-place Texas-San Antonio.

Host San Diego State won the team title by six strokes over Denver, 846-852. Colorado State, BYU and New Mexico rounded out the top five.

John Lepak of SDSU and California's Peter Tomasulo tied for the individual title, with 9-under 206s.

Hawaii next hosts the UH/Turtle Bay Classic on Oct. 28-29. Hawaii junior Matt Kodama is the defending tournament champion.
