‘Aloha Calls’
gets on the air


THIS PAST SUNDAY marked the debut of "Aloha Calls," an afternoon of Hawaiian music and dance broadcast live on the radio. Joe Recca hosted the program, which aired from 4 to 5 p.m. on 99.5 The Breeze.

The first of three monthly shows scheduled at Aloha Tower Marketplace's center atrium, Sunday's program featured the music of Reign, the comedy of Mel Cabang and the lovely Karen Keawehawaii and Cha Thompson, as well as the dancers of Tihati Productions. "Aloha Calls" also serves as a benefit for the nonprofit organization Aloha Boat Days - those people you see greeting cruise ship visitors as they arrive at Aloha Tower. Next month's "Aloha Calls" is scheduled for Nov. 10. Call 528-5700. ...

HELP CELEBRATE the grand opening of Tiki's Grill & Bar in the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel tomorrow night during a fund-raiser for the Waikiki Community Center. Doors open at 7 p.m. for the event, which includes free pupus and a hosted bar. Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom, the Kuhio Beach Band with Steve Mai'i and the Lilikoi Boys will also perform during the fund-raiser. Tickets are $20, and all proceeds go to the Waikiki Community Center. AND FINALLY, a correction to an item that ran Thursday in this space: Social Distortion singer and lead guitarist Mike Ness celebrated his 40th birthday this year; he was 17 when the group originally formed back in 1979 with Ness, brothers Frank and Rikk Agnew and Casey Royer. ...
