Detmer next for Chang

With the school passing yardage mark
out of the way, Chang has a shot
at the national record

UH avoids injury bug

Hawaii coach June Jones didn't have to do the math. He knew what he was talking about Saturday night when he said Warriors sophomore quarterback Tim Chang has a chance to break the all-time career passing yardage record if he doesn't get injured.

It wasn't just a crazy thing to say, something that shoots off your tongue after a 37-14 victory against Tulsa in which your quarterback passes for 403 yards and takes the top spot on the school's career list.

A few quick calculations show Jones is right; if Chang remains healthy he could break Ty Detmer's Division I-A career mark of 15,031 passing yards.

Chang, who is fifth nationally in total offense, has passed for 6,267 yards in his 20 college games for an average of 313.35. He needs 8,764 yards to catch Detmer. UH has six regular-season games (bowl games don't count in career records) left this season, 13 in 2003 and 12 in 2004.

A lot can happen in two years and 31 games. But if Chang averages 282.7 yards per game -- of which he's shown he is capable -- he catches Detmer.

An injury actually helped put Chang in position to even consider such an achievement: He played in three games last year and passed for 1,100 yards before ligament damage in his right wrist got him a date with the surgeon and another season of eligibility due to medical hardship.

Passing yardage is one thing. A better barometer for quarterback success is touchdowns-to-interceptions ratio and the best is wins. Chang may have turned a significant corner Saturday; he threw for a career-high four touchdowns and no interceptions in leading UH (5-2, 4-1 Western Athletic Conference) to its seventh consecutive home victory. It was only the second time in his career that he did not pass one to the other team.

Was this his best game?

"Statistically it looks like it," Chang said. "But it's just one game. I just try to play it to my best ability. I don't want to say that's the best, because I want to continue to do good and improve."

With a slow start this season, Chang had his detractors. Jones was not among them.

"I thought he played extremely well the last two weeks," Jones said. "He's effective when people come after him and he understands our offense extremely well."

Chang has answered at least one question about himself since his arrival at UH from St. Louis School in 2000. Although he didn't throw long much on Saturday, he has shown he has the arm strength to do so -- as well as to throw crisp short and medium passes.

"He's got a stronger arm than he did his freshman year and throws farther," Jones said. "We'll continue to work on his vertical game."

The next challenge for Chang is to prove he can win a big game on the road. That opportunity comes Friday at Fresno State. The Bulldogs (4-4, 2-1 WAC) are hurting after getting blown out 67-21 at Boise State, but they're still dangerous.

Hawaii is 1-6 in road games in which Chang has played. He has passed for eight touchdowns and 14 interceptions in those games. This will be his first game at Fresno State (Chang was injured when UH visited the Bulldogs in 2000).

Although he was the starting quarterback when Hawaii won 31-6 at Texas-El Paso last month, Chang didn't play well, and was replaced by Shawn Withy-Allen.

Withy-Allen continues to sub for Chang on occasion, but Jones has stuck with Chang as the starting quarterback.

"He keeps getting better and better and does a lot of things you can't coach," Jones said. "His best football's ahead of him."
