Chang leads UH runners


Victoria Chang hurried through 3 kilometers in 10 minutes and 33 seconds to win the Hawaii Cross Country Sprint Invitational at Kaneohe yesterday.

Chang's performance allowed the Wahine to beat Hawaii Pacific for the third time in three races when running with a full squad. Hannah Bremler came in third, followed by teammates Jennifer Crumley in sixth, Robin McRobbie in seventh and Teryn Bentley in eighth.

Sayuri Kusutani finished 13 seconds behind Chang to take second, but HPU anchor Nina Christensen, who is still recovering from a recent illness, was only able to finish fourth.

Christian Madsen finally found some competition in the 5K men's race, beating former Sea Warrior standout Christian Friis by 15 seconds with a time of 16:24. Friis was running unattached and prevented a 1-2-3 sweep by HPU. Sea Warriors Robert Tyler and Chris Larson finished third and fourth.

Still, HPU was able to dominate the meet, beating second-place Hawaii-Hilo 24-63.

Krejci, Hegedus bring 2 more titles home

BYU-Hawaii's Jan Krejci and Adrienn Hegedus captured the Division II singles titles yesterday at the Omni Hotels National Small College Tennis Championships at Corpus Christi, Texas.

Krejci beat Lynn's (Fla.) Marius Calugara 6-2, 6-1 in the men's singles final. Hegedus beat Armstrong Atlantic State's Zsofia Golopencza 1-6, 6-0, 7-5 in the women's final.

BYUH has now won 11 Division II and NAIA titles at this tournament since 1991.

With the titles, both advanced to the Omni Hotels Super Bowl of Small College Tennis in the afternoon, which featured the champions from the three other small college divisions. Krejci faced Jordon Freitas of Tyler (Texas) Junior College in the semifinals. Freitas won the first two sets 6-1 and 7-6 (5), but Krejci retired, citing his school's policy of not playing on Sundays.

Hegedus made the same decision despite leading Broward's Radtka Sottova, 6-2, 5-1.

BYUH and Chaminade win on the road

The No. 4 Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team swept Montana State-Billings for the second match in a row last night, winning 30-20, 30-25, 30-27 at Billings, Mont.

The Seasiders remain atop the Pacific West Conference standings at 6-1 (16-1 overall).

The Seasiders, led by Chun Yi Lin's 16 kills, never trailed in the first two games against Billings (6-12, 2-4).

Silverswords in second place: Kahala Kabalis had 27 kills as Chaminade beat Western New Mexico 30-23, 30-27, 28-30, 22-30, 15-12 at Silver City, N.M.

With Hawaii Pacific losing Friday, Chaminade is now alone in second place in the PacWest at 5-2 (13-3 overall).

WNMU fell to 3-19, 0-6.

HPU rebounds: The Seasiders swept Hawaii-Hilo 30-19, 30-25, 30-26 a night after losing to the Vulcans.

Susy Garbelotti had 28 kills for Hawaii Pacific (10-6, 4-2).Heidi Fabritz led Hilo (7-13, 3-4) with 13 kills.

Vulcans grab NCAA scholar-athlete awards

Five Hawaii-Hilo softball players were named All-American Scholar-Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association yesterday.

Winning the honors were pitchers Taysha Anderson and Tara Martinez, designated hitters Kelly Moore and Abby Padasdao, and infielder Kalei Robia.

The team's 3.04 grade point average was the 36th highest among NCAA Division II programs.

Seasiders clinch Island series

The Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team beat Chaminade 10-9 at Laie yesterday, clinching its five-game series with the fellow Hawaii school.

It was the first-ever home match for the Seasiders, who trailed early in the third quarter until Kirk Mitchell scored twice in 37 seconds to tie it. Vanja Kalabic scored one of his match-high four goals later in the quarter to give the Seasiders the lead for good.

The Seasiders improved to 10-8 while the Silverswords dropped to 7-3. All of the Silverswords' losses have been to BYUH.

Lambert nabs 2 AVP awards

Former Punahou and Stanford standout Mike Lambert was recognized Oct. 15 for his outstanding first season on the Association of Volleyball Professionals Tour, taking home two awards from the organization's annual banquet at Beverly Hills, Calif.

Lambert won the league's rookie of the year and best blocker awards.

Local doctor hits the big time

Local orthopedic surgeon Darryl Kan will be featured tomorrow on Fox Sports Network's "Behind the Game."

Kan, who is also the offensive coordinator for the Punahou football team, will be profiled at noon in a segment of the show that features some of the country's top doctors at work with athletes.

Na Koa lunch to feature Jones, Lempa

Hawaii head football coach June Jones and defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa will present game film of yesterday's game against Tulsa at Na Koa football club's weekly lunch tomorrow.

They will also preview Friday's rematch with Fresno State.

Na Koa luncheons begin at 11:30 a.m. at the All Star Café in Waikiki.

Murphy thanked by City Council

Local booster Don Murphy was recognized by the Honolulu City Council for his skill in raising funds for Hawaii's sports teams.

Council member Jon Yoshimura estimated that Murphy has raised $800,000 for the school and will top $1 million by 2004.
