Sheriffs open fire at security checkpoint
Police and state sheriffs are looking for a man who they say ran through a Honolulu Airport security checkpoint and injured two deputy sheriffs last night.Police and sheriffs officials said that sometime before 6:13 p.m., the male suspect drove up to the Lagoon Drive checkpoint in a vehicle with flashing blue lights and stopped for an ID check. Police said the suspect gave the sheriffs a stolen identification card when they asked for identification.
When deputy sheriffs ran the car license plate, they discovered the vehicle was stolen. The suspect then took off, grazing two sheriffs.
He drove on Aolele Street and escaped onto the H-1 viaduct.
Sheriffs confirmed that officers fired shots at the suspect.
Emergency medical personnel said the two injured deputies, ages 30 and 48, were in stable condition and walked into the Queens Medical Center emergency room after being taken there by ambulance.
Lagoon Drive was shut down for more than three hours in both directions during the investigation.
"There were cars backed up waiting to get through, maybe about 30 of them when I was in line," said Jacob Straube, an employee of Straube's Airport Services near Lagoon Drive.
