HTA to meet
with engineers about
Aloha Stadium turf

With Hawaii coach June Jones once again voicing his displeasure with the playing surface at Aloha Stadium, the Hawaii Tourism Authority is scheduled to meet with engineers tomorrow to get an update on the costs and timetable for replacing the surface, officials said.

Meanwhile, a National Football League spokesman confirmed that the league is working with the stadium on the costs to replace the existing surface.

Rex Johnson, president and chief executive officer of the Hawaii Tourism Authority, said much of the details regarding the replacement of the 3-year-old AstroTurf should be answered at the meeting.

Fieldturf officials said the new turf would be installed at a cost of $877,500, of which the Hawaii Tourism Authority agreed to pay $500,000, with Fieldturf and the NFL contributing the remaining costs.

Contractors then said it would take between $1 million and $2 million to prepare the stadium floor for the FieldTurf installation.

Seasiders move to top of regional ranking

The Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball team took the top spot in the NCAA II West region poll.

The Seasiders (14-1) passed Cal State San Bernardino (18-1) after the Coyotes were swept by Cal State Los Angeles on Friday. Chaminade (11-3) remained in the No. 5 spot and Hawaii Pacific (9-5) was ranked ninth after being left out of the previous poll.

The poll will determine the six teams invited to the regional tournament on Nov. 17. The top team gets the first shot at hosting the event.

Chaminade drops out of water polo poll

Chaminade dropped out of the latest Collegiate Water Polo Association's Top 20 poll.

The Silverswords (7-2) have been idle since losing to Brigham Young-Hawaii Oct. 4, but will meet the Seasiders on Friday in Laie.

BYUH (9-8) stayed in the No. 18 spot in the poll.
