Producers of the movie, with the working title "Helldorado," intend to drop a jeep off a cliff near Kapena Falls in Nuuanu. Equipment trucks filled the parking lot at the lookout.
$506,000 grant aids festivals on Maui
WAILUKU >> Maui County will be giving business groups some $506,000 under a tourism Product Enrichment Program.The money comes from the Hawaii Tourism Authority and will help to support festivals on Maui, including "In Celebration of Canoes" in Lahaina and "The Thing" in Ulupalakua, an annual fair that features products grown and made on Maui.
The awards to 14 programs in 2002-2003 range from $15,000 to $75,000. More information about the program may be obtained through the county Office of Economic Development, 270-7710.
Schools spruced up, thanks to volunteers
Mililani Uka and Kipapa Elementary Schools have been spruced up recently with fresh paint, thanks to Hawaii 3 R's, a project using volunteers to help with the backlog of school renovations.Volunteers included MShiroma Painting Co., Castle and Cooke employees, Mililani Lions Club members, parents and members of the Army. Funding has come from the Hawaii Community Foundation, the Campbell Estate and the AT&T Foundation.

92-year-old man dies in hit-and-run accident
Police are looking for the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 92-year-old man who was walking to work yesterday in Manoa.The victim, a gardener, was crossing Manoa Road at Lanihuli Drive about 5:40 a.m. when he was hit. Police said he was taken to Queen's Medical Center, where he later died.
Witnesses told police they saw a light-colored sedan, possibly a Nissan, leave the area. Police said the vehicle slowed after the impact and then left.
Police are asking the public and the auto body repair shops to be aware of anyone trying to fix unusual damage to a vehicle.
"In the past, we've caught hit-and-run suspects because of tips from auto repair people," said CrimeStoppers Detective Letha DeCaires.

Motorcycle victim ID'ed as Honolulu man
The Honolulu medical examiner's office has identified a man killed in a motorcycle accident Tuesday night as Leonard Toussaint, 27, of Honolulu.Police said Toussaint may have been speeding and lost control of his motorcycle while traveling Ewa-bound on the Moanalua Freeway near Kaiser Moanalua Medical Center.

House fire in Maili may have killed pet
A Maili house fire may have killed a family pet yesterday, according to Honolulu fire officials.The fire at 86-161 Mailiili Homestead Road began about 1:30 p.m. and destroyed the home of a family of three. Fire officials said the family's pet Chihuahua was missing. Damage was estimated at $120,000.
A 21-year-old man who was home at the time of the fire was not injured, officials said.
Man surrenders in possible robbery
A 24-year-old man turned himself in to Honolulu police Tuesday after allegedly beating and robbing his girlfriend on Monday. The girlfriend, 21, reported that the suspect beat her and stole her wallet.

Motorcycle fatality was Schofield soldier
The Honolulu medical examiner has identified a man who died Saturday in a traffic collision on California Avenue as Robert E. Pederson IV of Wahiawa. Police said the Schofield Barracks soldier was thrown from his motorcycle when he hit a pickup truck reversing into a driveway.

Electricity cut after sleepy driver hits pole
A man falling asleep behind the wheel crashed into a utility police about 4:50 a.m. today near Crouching Lion Restaurant, causing a blackout for about 1,400 Hawaiian Electric customers.Police said the driver, a man in his 20s, received minor injuries and his car landed in the ocean. Power was completely restored by 6:35 a.m., said Fred Kobashikawa, Hawaiian Electric Company spokesman.
