Athletes of the Week

Three teams completed the Oahu Interscholastic Association air riflery season undefeated last week to capture their division titles.

McKinley (8-0-1) won the OIA East boys championship and Kalani (9-0) won the girls title. Pearl City went 7-0 to win the OIA West boys crown. Waipahu and Kapolei (6-1) shared the girls title in the West.

The OIA boys individual championships are set for Oct. 22.

The girls title will be decided Oct. 23.

The OIA team championships are Oct. 25 (girls) and 26 (boys).

The girls semifinals feature Kalani taking on Kapolei and defending OIA champion Kaimuki facing Waipahu.

For only the second time since the OIA first instituted team championships in 1995, Leilehua will not win the boys title.

McKinley faces Kapolei in the first boys semifinal and Roosevelt meets Pearl City in the other. Leilehua had won the last three championships and six of the seven awarded since 1995.

All of the OIA championship events start at 11 a.m. at Pearl City's rifle range.

The state championships will be held Nov. 4 (girls) and 5 (boys) at the Dole Cannery Ballrooms.

Postseason bound: With one week left in the regular season, several teams are still battling for berths in the OIA football playoffs.

Five teams each from the OIA East Red and West Red Conferences and the top two from the White Conference qualify for the postseason.

Kailua (6-0) and Kahuku (5-1) meet Saturday for the top seed in the East Red. McKinley and Castle (3-3) are in the playoffs and close the season Friday against Kalaheo (0-6) and Roosevelt (2-4), respectively.

A Castle win pushes Farrington (3-4) into the playoffs. Victories by Roosevelt and McKinley extend the Rough Riders' season.

The West Red's qualifiers have been determined, all that's left to decide is seeding.

Campbell is alone in first at 5-1 with Waianae a game behind at 4-2.

The Seariders can tie Campbell for first place when they host the Sabers on Friday. Leilehua, Mililani and Waipahu have also secured postseason berths.

In the White, Kaimuki and Nanakuli (both 5-1) battle for the conference title Saturday at Roosevelt, but Kapolei and Pearl City still hold playoff hopes.

Kaimuki has already clinched a spot and Nanakuli can make things simple by winning on Saturday.

Kapolei (4-2) closes the season against Kalani and can tie Nanakuli for second place with a win and a Kaimuki victory over the Golden Hawks. If Kapolei and Nanakuli both finish 5-2, the Hurricanes hold the tiebreaker edge thanks to their 28-22 win over Nanakuli on Sept. 7.

Pearl City must beat Kaiser and hope for a Kapolei win and a Nanakuli loss to force a three-way coin flip.

The playoffs begin Oct. 24.

Getting it right: Siblings Peter and Haili Van Lier Ribbink were the winners of the ILH kayaking meet on Oct. 5. Their names were misspelled in last week's results and honor roll.

Peter, who attends Iolani, earned his second victory of the season on Saturday at Keehi Lagoon. He finished the boys 3,000-meter race in 13 minutes 7.17 seconds.

Haili, a Punahou student, finished second in the girls race coming in at 15:51.20. Her teammate, Lindsey Wessberg, won the race with a time of 14:45.87.
