The following is a preview of movies opening Friday:

"Abandon" >> Katie Holmes plays a college student suffering from the rigors of academia and the lingering effects of the disappearance of her boyfriend (Charlie Hunnan) years earlier. When he mysteriously reappears, she's dragged back into her past while growing increasingly entangled with the investigating detective (Benjamin Bratt). (PG-13).

"Formula 51" >> Samuel L. Jackson and Hong Kong action director Ronny Yu pair up for this flick set in Liverpool, England, where the club-and-drug backdrop is a fitting destination for Jackson's American character, who's concocted a narcotic 51 times more potent than anything on the market. After double-crossing his drug-lord boss, he heads to England, where he's partnered with a motormouth hood (Robert Carlyle) and stalked by a hitwoman (Emily Mortimer). (R)

"The Ring" >> This is the English version of the 1998 Japanese cult hit about a cursed videotape that kills its viewers seven days after they've watched it. Naomi Watts plays a reporter who learns her niece's death was caused by the tape. If she watches it to gain evidence, will the same fate befall her? (R)
