Entertaining benefit

Andy Bumatai, Mel Cabang, Don Ho, Kimo Kahoano, Karen Keawehawaii and Tom Moffatt are among a long list of local entertainers coming together Oct. 27 for one of their own. A fund-raiser for entertainer Dick Jensen, who suffered a heart attack and is recovering from triple-bypass surgery, will take place 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani's Ainahau Showroom. 'Aloha Calls' at Tower

The Aloha Tower Marketplace will hold a free afternoon of music as it attempts to bring back the ambience of old Hawaii through "Aloha Calls."

The program, 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, will be hosted by Joe Recca, Nina Kealiiwahamana, Iwalani Kahalewai and Hiram and Casey Olsen, featuring special guests Cha Thompson, Karen Keawehawaii, Mel Cabang, Reign and the Tihati dancers.

The show also will be broadcast live by 99.5 The Breeze.

"Aloha Calls at the Atrium" also will take place Nov. 10 and Dec. 1. Each show will bring the audience up close to some of the top island performers.

HOT tickets on sale

Single-ticket sales have begun for Hawaii Opera Theatre's 42nd season, which opens Jan. 31 with "Eugene Onegin," about an aristocratic young man who spurns the love of a young country girl who becomes a wealthy princess.

Following the season's theme of "coming of age" are "The Magic Flute," beginning Feb. 14, and "La Boheme," starting Feb. 28. The former, timed to coincide with Valentine's Day, is about an Egyptian prince who must rescue the princess he loves from an evil queen. The latter is a much-loved opera about Parisian poet Rodolpho and a seamstress, Mimi, whose tumultuous love affair ends with an untimely death.

Single tickets are $27 to $95; season tickets are $75 to $270. Tickets can be purchased through the HOTline at 596-7858, or 800-836-7372 if calling from the neighbor islands, or at the HOT box office, 985 Waimanu St., 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

World Bazaar coming

Christmas shoppers will be able to pick up indigenous crafts from exotic ports of call at the Honolulu Academy of Arts 21st World Art Bazaar, Nov. 30 through Dec. 15, in the Academy Art Center at Linekona's spacious first-floor gallery.

Among the treasures will be antique Chinese baskets, mother-of-pearl inlaid boxes from Korea, Indonesian puppets, Thai hill tribe silver necklaces and Siberian birch-bark boxes. There also will be a collection of kimono, Thai silk ikat sarongs and dresses made from African mudcloth.

Proceeds will support academy programs.

The event will run 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesdays to Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. Validated parking will be $1 in the lot behind the art center.

Any kings out there?

The year ain't over, but the King Kamehameha Celebration Commission is already searching for parade royalty for the June 7, 2003, King Kamehameha Celebration Floral Parade.

Applications are available for pa'u marshal, pa'u queen, pa'u princesses, unit attendants and escorts, marching bands, floral floats, decorated vehicles and someone to portray King Kamehameha.

Volunteers are also being sought to assist with parade organization, statue decoration and parking supervisors for the Folklife Festival in Kapiolani Park, following the parade. Food and craft vendors are also being sought.
