Zippy’s closure a temporary
hardship for night owls

Word that Zippy's Kapahulu is closed for renovation immediately evoked the question, "Where will the nightclubbers go to eat?"

The question made Jay Crisologo chuckle. He's the creative specialist for Zippy's Restaurants.

The restaurant and its Napoleon's Bakery, popular during regular hours and the wee hours, is to be ready to reopen Oct. 21, he said.

In 2001, the original Zippy's in Kaneohe was not just renovated, but torn down. It opened another location on William Henry Road, which is still open and offers drive-through pickup service.

The Kapahulu store, once reopened, will continue to operate 24-hours a day for those who get the onos at all hours.

The call from TheBuzz was taken by Crisologo because the person who would normally handle such a media inquiry was out on maternity leave.

Marketing Manager Jeanine Mamiya-Kalahiki had in fact just welcomed baby boy Kanoa into the world hours earlier on Friday, Crisologo said.

The question lingers

There are more than 20 other Zippy's restaurants and the other option for Waikiki late-nighters is the Kaimuki location on Waialae Avenue.

For those with a not-so-late curfew, Columbia Inn on Waialae Avenue closes at midnight, but what about elsewhere?

A completely unscientific survey of people with lives that allow them to go out on occasion netted other night-time noshing possibilities.

In Waikiki there are the tried-and-true Wailana Coffee House, Sizzler and Denny's.

Depending on what type of fare is desired, there's Korean food at Sorabol on Keeaumoku Street or Sanoya's for noodles. Further mauka there's the Hungry Lion for wee-hours cuisine.

It was also pointed out that not all nightlife is limited to Waikiki and that in the Nimitz area options include New Eagle Cafe, Byron's and L&L Airport.

A columnist, who asked not to be named, said "I tend to just go to Jack in the Box because I can take it home, pig out and then pass out."
