Republican candidate for governor Linda Lingle spent more than a half-million dollars in the last two weeks of the primary campaign, according to new filings with the state Campaign Spending Commission.

While Lingle spent $581,834 in the last two weeks of the primary race, she raised $256,000 in contributions during the same period.

The contributions are more than the combined total of the three Democratic candidates for governor.

The three Democrats spent about the same amount as each other in the closing weeks of the primary. D.G. "Andy" Anderson spent $135,347; state Rep. Ed Case doled out $133,863; and Lt. Gov. Mazie Hirono put up $151,655.

Case, who lost to Hirono by 2,600 votes, had said at the time that campaign advisers told him the only thing stopping him from winning the election was a lack of money to buy ads.

Case and Hirono also raised about the same: Case received $77,633 and Hirono picked up $70,002. But Anderson was able to raise only $14,817.

Up to the Sept. 21 primary election, Lingle had raised a total of $3,348,152; Anderson, $828,995.48; Case, $705,840; and Hirono, $1,255,332.

Among the candidates for lieutenant governor, the big spender was unsuccessful GOP candidate Dalton Tanonaka, who spent $116,968 in the last two weeks of the primary election.

The winner of the GOP primary, James "Duke" Aiona, spent $42,879, while former representative Cam Cavasso spent $12,835. Aiona raised $22,960, while Cavasso received $7,555 and Tanonaka picked up $26,369.

On the Democratic side of the lieutenant governor race, primary winner Sen. Matt Matsunaga spent $4,118 and raised $32,092.

Former Board of Education member Donna Ikeda spent $4,382 and raised $13,970 in the campaign's closing weeks, and Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee Clayton Hee raised $33,660 and spent $5,594.
