Election 2002

Gov's remark reflects Democrats' arrogance

As I watched the news Wednesday evening, I was stunned by the audacity of a statement Governor Cayetano made in support of the Democrat Party replacing Patsy Mink on the November ballot (which the state Supreme Court later ruled against). When he said the Democrat Party "would choose more coherently than the voters in a regular election," he pretty much summed up the attitude that Democrats have had toward Hawaii's voters for many years.

His arrogance in this statement mirrors that of the party in general in taking for granted their "right to rule." Then again, we've continued to vote for him and so many other Democrats who share this opinion for so long that maybe he's not wrong.

Hirono inspires people to work together

Mazie Hirono has been a deeply committed and effective public servant for many years. She was first elected in 1980. I know that fact without any research, for I ran for the same seat back then.

Mazie is a leader who walks the talk. She is result-oriented. She gets results because she knows how to work with people. More important, she knows how to inspire people to work for the common good. Mazie is about positive results, and that's what every worker, student, senior and child needs. Just one example is that her results in early childhood education will benefit Hawaii for many years to come. We need a leader like Mazie Hirono.

Don't blame GOP for dockworkers action

Let's see if I've got this straight: The dockworkers, some of this country's highest-paid blue-collar workers, have decided they need more money. As a result of their latest action, we had millions of pounds of food rotting on ships at the West Coast docks. This has cost billions of dollars in losses, which can never be recovered.

This adversely affects all of us -- the working class, farmers and everyone in the food-distribution chain. It will most certainly result in higher prices for months to come.

The Democrats -- the so-called people's party, who routinely are endorsed by big labor unions -- say our Republican president should do something.

I suppose when our economy goes bad, somehow it will end up being the fault of the Republicans. Uh-huh.

The case is not yet closed for Hawaii

As we stand on the edge of change with the ability to elect a new congressman, I hope we can honor the memory of Patsy Mink and place Ed Case in Congress to represent Hawaii. The man has youth, vigor, knowledge and the ability to clearly speak on the issues. I believe he will stand against business as usual and will always place the good of all people of Hawaii in the best interest.

He demonstrated his soul in the recent primary and clearly, given a little more time, would have been running in the general election for governor. Let this man's soul and passion not rest, but elect him to service in the best interest of Hawaii and the nation.

Delaying games helps only TV anchor, station

Well, I see once again Hawaii gets to view major sporting events after the rest of the world. KHON is delaying the baseball playoffs and World Series. In its press release, the station never used the word "delay," it's "we're putting the games in prime-time for all the family to enjoy." Actually, it seems like this is to help Joe Moore, who really doesn't need any more help. Now his newscasts will bookend the baseball games, so he gets a larger audience and KHON gets to charge more for its commercial time.

So much for the viewers. Not too many kids will be watching at 9:30 or 10 on a weeknight. Others say it's because no one can watch during the day, but I don't remember any major University of Hawaii playoff games being delayed, and the Hawaii business world seemed to survive just fine with some people watching sports during the workday.

Let's call it what is is: greed. It's a good thing KHON is the Fox affiliate -- they don't have any programs I'm going to miss. Aloha, KHON, there are plenty of other channels to watch.
