Midnight Ohana tonight

Hawaii basketball coach Riley Wallace thinks he's finally figured out a way to have his Rainbows win the annual 3-point shootout at Midnight Ohana: Move back the line.

The Wahine have won the long-distance contest the past three years, including last year's 4-3 victory by April Atuaia over Mike McIntyre.

Wallace hasn't yet decided who will be shooting for the Rainbows tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center, although the edge seems to be with newcomer Michael Kuebler, a junior guard out of Clackamas (Ore.) Community College.

The use of the farther 3-point line, however, has been determined. The move will be from the 19 feet, 9 inches it has been since 1986 to the international distance of 20-6.

In June, the NCAA rules committee approved the experimental use of the longer distance in exempted tournaments such as the Rainbow Classic and Maui Invitational. Also approved will be the use of the wider NBA-width free-throw lane and wider spacing of the lane boxes for players lined up during free-throw attempts.

While the experimental rules are seen as the future of the college game, tonight's Midnight Ohana will revisit the past. "Disco Days" is the theme for the evening that begins with an 8 p.m. mini-carnival on the outer concourse of the Sheriff Center.

From 8 to 10 p.m., the Wahine Basketball Junior Fan Club will be signing up new members. Students in grades 8 and below will receive a free season pass to all Wahine home games.

At 11:30 p.m., the men's and women's teams will be introduced, followed by the 3-point and slam-dunk contests. The Rainbows' Green-White scrimmage is scheduled for 12:10 a.m.
