Agbayani to host
youth baseball camp

Hawaii big-leaguer Benny Agbayani has announced plans to host a Nov. 16 baseball camp for kids ages 11-18.

Agbayani, currently with the Boston Red Sox, will put on the M.Y.T.H. (Motivate Yourself to the Highest) Youth Foundation's Baseball Clinic at Mililani High School.

He said that the aim is to educate campers on all-around baseball skills, including, "the skills that we learn during spring training and adapt them to these kids when they come out to my camp."

Agbayani expects to include other local pros and high school coaches on the instructional staff.

The cost is $50, which includes a T-shirt and lunch, and the field is limited to the first 100 participants. Applications are available at local schools and all City Bank locations. The application deadline is Oct. 31.

"Hopefully this camp can be like an every year thing, where the more kids come, the more (baseball in Hawaii is) going to develop," Agbayani said.

Sasada fires 71 at Western tourney

Kahului's Brian Sasada shot a 1-under-par 71 yesterday at the Western PGA Club Professional Championship at Lehi, Utah.

Sasada is seven strokes behind leader Steve Schneiter of Utah, who had nine birdies and an eagle to set a course record.

Other Hawaii players included Brendan Moynahan (Lanai City) and Kirk Nelson (Kihei), who both fired rounds of 74.

The low 30 scorers earn a berth in the national PGA Club Professional Championship.

Ruth commits to San Diego

Kamehameha senior Keoni Ruth has verbally committed to attend the University of San Diego on a baseball scholarship next year.

Ruth, an all-state selection at shortstop, informed USD coach Rich Hill of his decision on Monday. He was also offered a scholarship by Hawaii.

Ruth must wait until Nov. 13 to sign a national letter of intent.

"I had to think about staying or going away, but I knew since I was young that I wanted to go away," Ruth said. "Academically it's a good school and I feel the coaches and the baseball program there will help me become a better player."

Ruth (5-foot-11, 180 pounds) helped Kamehameha win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu championship last spring and led the Warriors to the state title game.

Ruth also plays receiver for the Kamehameha football team and has seven receptions for 183 yards and two touchdowns in ILH play this season. But he said he will concentrate on baseball in college.

"I really enjoy (playing football), but in the long run I think I have a better future in baseball," Ruth said.

San Diego won its first West Coast Conference championship last season.
