Macys celebrates its
second Hawaii ChristmasThere's walking down memory lane, the song "Primrose Lane" and Kalihi's Pua Lane.
Now at Ala Moana Center there's Holiday Lane.
It's a temporary off-shoot of Macy's, which will set up other Holiday Lane shops at Pearlridge Center, Kukui Grove on Kauai and Prince Kuhio Plaza in Hilo. Other Macy's locations in Hawaii will have in-store Holiday Lane sections.
In the stand-alone store in the old Pocketbook Man space at Ala Moana, 29 Christmas trees are festooned with some of the shop's 100,000 ornaments from all over the world. From Sweden's Orrefors to Hawaii-based Ornaments to Remember, dangling decorations have been hung with care according to theme, from traditional to tropical, South Pole to South Pacific.
Other ornament arrangements are patriotic, angelic, nostalgic, Asiatic, comic and probably lots of other -ics. Dolphinic, for instance is not a word, but there is a dolphin-themed tree.

Dolphins burst from the top of a Christmas tree at Holiday Lane, which Macy's opened yesterday at Ala Moana Center.
Another of the offerings is civic, as the shop carries the official 2002 Honolulu City Lights ornament. It can be previewed on the City and County Web site at www.co.honolulu.hi.us/mayor/citylights/ornament.htm.
Last year at this time Macy's big push was to convert the old Liberty House stores and open under its own name on Nov. 23.
Its first Christmas in Hawaii brought much customer feedback to store officials, who were on a learning curve about the way the holidays are celebrated in the islands. However, store officials were already well aware that local vendors' holiday wares must be represented, as they were over the years at Liberty House.
As it was at Liberty House, Christmas stuff would start making appearances even before Halloween, as is the case this year at Macy's.
The stand-alone Holiday Lane shops will "help customers celebrate the season in their own unique Island styles," said Deena Nichols, senior vice president and director of stores in Hawaii and Guam.
It also helps the company with its continuing transition, or "Macy-ization," of the old Liberty House stores.

The store specializes in Christmas ornaments and related items -- by the thousands. It houses more than a dozen trees, each with a unique theme.
