Hawaii's John West ran for 27 yards on three carries Saturday against Boise State.
BSUs deception BOISE, Idaho >> When Chris Brown talks about the way Boise State's offense deceived Hawaii in the Warriors' 58-31 loss to the Broncos on Saturday, he's not referring to BSU's first touchdown, on a pass off a reverse.

dreardon@starbulletin.comNo, the UH middle linebacker is more frustrated by the way Boise State kept Hawaii off balance throughout the game, in a less obvious sense.
"They came with a lot of different things to the table. Trickery. A little move just to make us take a step in a direction and then they hit a different hole, things like that." Brown said. "They forced us into little mistakes that added up. We did a good job overall, but they did a little more than us."
The Broncos don't have lots of big-time talent, but they are a complete team with a multitude of players and plays of which a defense must be wary. That makes them hard to stop.
UH went into the game with arguably -- and, by some measures, statistically -- the best defense in the Western Athletic Conference. It comes out of it wounded and looking for answers. The Warriors had yielded one touchdown in eight quarters; the Broncos put up 10 or more points in all four periods Saturday.
"It kind of brought us down to Earth, it's kind of humiliating. It's time for a gut check," Brown said. "We thought coming into this game we have everything. Obviously we don't. When we watch film next week and we practice and fix those things, we are going to dominate. It's little mistakes that are happening."
A big part of the problem was that the Warriors didn't cause mistakes. Hawaii came up with three turnovers (and capitalized on all of them) against Southern Methodist the previous week, and that was a big reason it got away with six giveaways. Against Boise State? Zero takeaways.
The combined 21-point difference in Hawaii's previous four losses of the past two seasons (one this year and three in 2001) is less than the difference was Saturday.
Getting blown out is something most of these Warriors have rarely experienced, and it will be interesting to see how they bounce back. Coach June Jones said that process actually started Saturday during the game. The Warriors outscored the Broncos 21-13 in the fourth quarter.
It could have turned into the kind of thing UH used to experience in the Fred von Appen regime, when Hawaii went 0-12 in 1998 (or in Jones' first game, the 62-7 loss to USC).
The difference is that the Warriors didn't give up.
"We didn't quit. We tried to battle back. But when you're on the road and you give them 14 quick ones like that it kind of dampens your spirits. But the guys played hard," Jones said. "Unfortunately we lose. But it's one game and we've got to get ready for next week."
Jones kept most of his starters in until the end.
"When did I think it was over? When the final horn went off," said starting quarterback Tim Chang. "As long as I'm in there, I'm going to keep trying my hardest."
Once again, Chad Owens was Chang's favorite target. He caught 12 passes for 93 yards, but couldn't break away for anything longer than 12 yards.
"They just made a couple more plays than us," Owens said. "They won the turnover battle. I don't think they stopped us on defense. We drove, drove and drove."
Whether it was Boise State or Hawaii, something held back the Warriors until it was too late.
"The game comes down to taking advantage. They had a lot of quick points and it's hard to come back when you're down on the road," receiver Britton Komine said. "We messed up."
UH has scored only 30 of its 197 points (15 percent) in the first quarter (last season it was 91 of 483 for 19 percent). Offensive lineman Wayne Hunter noticed the trend.
"From what I've seen of our first five games this year, it seems like it takes us a couple of series to warm up," the left tackle said. "We can't be having that."
