Blind pedestrian
safety walk planned

Star-Bulletin staff

About 200 blind and visually impaired persons and their supporters will hold a White Cane Safety Awareness Day Walk Oct. 15.

It will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the state Capitol flagpole on Beretania Street, proceed makai on Punchbowl Street, then head Ewa-bound on King Street to Bishop Street. Walkers will then return to Beretania and turn right on Richards Street to the Iolani Palace grounds.

The day has been organized to remind everyone to take necessary precautions to avoid accidents on the streets, and to increase public awareness about the white cane, the national symbol of blindness.

Organizing the event is the Ho'opono Services for the Blind Branch of the Vocational Rehabilitation Division of the state Department of Human Services.

Contact Jon Koki, community services coordinator at Ho'opono, at 586-5267 for more information.
