Kauai's Kennelly KO'd
Kauai native Keala Kennelly and Rochelle Ballard of Hawaii tied for third in the Roxy Pro France yesterday at Hossegor.
Kennelly, who won the Tahitian WCT earlier this year, lost to Sofia Mulanovich in the first semifinal but moved into fourth position on the current ratings.
"She kicked my butt," Kennelly said. "She surfed really well and had an awesome start, an awesome middle, and then an awesome finish. What can you do? Third place is a lot better than 9th, which I got last event, so I'm easy to please. Looking forward to going home now."
Ballard posted a near-perfect 9.75 for her quarterfinal barrel ride but lost to eventual champion Layne Beachley.
Irons leads pace: Current ratings leader Andy Irons dominated the men's tournament with the highest combined two-wave total of the event for 18.15-points.
Irons, who eliminated Taylor Knox, posted a 9.15 for a great barrel ride, and then a 9.0 with his trademark forehand reverse 360. He will now meet fellow Hawaii surfer Kalani Robb in the second quarterfinal, after the goofy footer ousted Maz Quinn.
Metzger, Wong back in finals
Fifth-seeded Punahou products Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong upset top-seeded Emanuel Rego and Ricardo Santos 21-18, 21-19 at Fortaleza, Brazil, to advance to the gold medal match of the FIVB event on the Praia do Futur.Metzger and Wong will challenge second-seeded Marcio Araujo and Benjamin Insfran of Brazil in the championship today.
Sean Scott, also a Punahou graduate, suffered a back injury and he and partner Todd Rogers had to forfeit the rest of their matches. They finished ninth.
Big names to appear at Quarterback Club
Hawaii football coach June Jones and basketball coach Riley Wallace will be the featured speakers at tomorrow's meeting of the Honolulu Quarterback Club.Lloyd Hisaka, assistant director of intermurals at UH, will also speak. Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda in Honolulu, the program begins at noon.
More coaches around town: UH offensive line coach Mike Cavanaugh and quarterbacks coach Dan Morrison will speak at tomorrow's meeting of the Na Koa Football Club.
The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. at All-Star Café.
Wahine take fourth at Williamette
Compared to the previous week of practice, the Williamette Invitational at Salem, Ore., was a breeze for the UH cross country team.Victoria Chang finished seventh with a time of 17:20.77 and Hanna Bremler was eight seconds behind in tenth to lead the Wahine to a fourth place finish with 133 points, behind Idaho (46), Auburn (47), and Oregon (110).
Former Hawaii state champion Anne Kawasaki of St. Francis finished 24th for Portland State.
Groenwoud gets the best of Alumnae
Natalie Groenwoud scored a goal and assisted on another as the Hawaii soccer team won its alumnae game 2-0 yesterday.Groenwoud scored her goal at 27:25 before assisting on a goal by Carmen Calpo at 59:45.
The Rainbow Wahine get back to playing real games when they host Tulsa on Friday and Rice on Sunday at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Seasiders sweep ITA regional
Brigham Young-Hawaii tennis players took all of the honors at the ITA West Regional Tournament at Pomona, Calif., yesterday.Jan Krejci beat teammate Peter Madarassy 4-6, 7-5, 6-0 to win the men's singles title before teaming up with him to take out Greg Lee and Paul Dilloway of UC Davis for the doubles crown.
Adrienn Hegedus matched Krejci's performance, beating teammate Amy Sun 6-2, 6-2 for the women's singles title, then joining her to win the doubles tournament by scores of 8-0, 8-1.
All four Seasiders advance to the ITA National tournament in Corpus Christi, Texas, Oct. 17-19.
Sandblom, Gaspar top draw: Hawaii Pacific's Eric Sandblom and Brigham Young-Hawaii's Petra Gaspar top the main draws for the Dillingham Grand Prix Tennis Championships beginning Saturday at Punahou.
Sandblom is the defending champion on the men's side. Woman's defending champ Nathalia Jung will not defend her crown.
