Kuhio Park Terrace fire under investigation

The cause of a two-alarm fire in apartment 608 of the Kuhio Park Terrace building, 1545 Linapuni St., was under investigation last night.

The fire seems to have started in one of the bedrooms in the two-bedroom apartment, said fire department spokesman Capt. Richard Soo.

The fire damaged the living room, kitchen and the bedroom.

The Red Cross is assisting the 35-year-old woman and her 4-year-old son who lived in the apartment.

The woman and her son were visiting relatives in another apartment when the fire broke out.

A damage estimate was not immediately available.

Nine fire units were called to the fire at 7:15 p.m. and the fire was out by 7:55 p.m., a spokesman said.

Man drowns while fishing off Makapuu

A 47-year-old Makiki man drowned while fishing in a cove near Makapuu Beach yesterday morning.

The man was fishing with his 42-year-old wife between the Makapuu Lighthouse and the Makapuu lookout, not far from where 27-year-old Warren Matsuda fell to his death during a fishing trip Sept. 27.

Apparently, the man fell while fishing with nets and traps, said fire Capt. Richard Soo.

Someone noticed the man floating face down in the water and lifeguards reached him on their personal water craft, Soo said.

High surf and rough waters made the recovery difficult. The man was airlifted to Makapuu Beach, where emergency workers tried to resuscitate him, but he was breathless and pulseless, Soo said. The man was pronounced dead at 12:03 p.m.

Michigan man drowns at Hanauma Bay

A 69-year-old man from Michigan apparently drowned in Hanauma Bay about 12:08 p.m. yesterday.

Lifeguards found the man, and they and Hawaii Kai firemen and emergency medical technicians tried to revive him, but the victim had no pulse or breath when the fire engine arrived, fire Capt. Richard Soo said. Details weren't available on how the drowning occurred.

The man was taken by ambulance to Queen's Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Motorcyclist critical after hitting guardrail

A 26-year-old Hauula woman driving a motorcycle northbound on Kamehameha Highway lost control and hit a guardrail about 11:40 a.m. yesterday, Kahuku police reported.

The woman, who wasn't wearing a helmet, was taken by military helicopter to Queen's Medical Center, where she was reported in critical condition.

The northbound lane was closed, which caused some traffic delays.

Motorists were advised to take an alternate route until the lane was reopened about 2:30 p.m.

Fire department copter searching for 5 hikers

The fire department helicopter was trying to rescue five stranded hikers at the 1,500-foot level in the back of Kahana Valley last night, said fire Capt. Richard Soo.

The hikers called the fire department on a cell phone about 8:32 p.m.

They set a small fire so the helicopter could locate them.

The fire department was trying to determine if the helicopter would be able to airlift them out safely or if they would have to spend the night on the mountain, Soo said.
