Men to march against domestic violence
"The Courage to Change" will be the theme of the Men's March Against Violence Thursday in downtown Honolulu.Sponsors of the annual demonstration seek to dramatize that men must take responsibility for bringing an end to violence on Oahu, where 14,433 personal/family violence offenses were reported in 2001, and throughout the state.
It will begin at noon at Kekaulike Plaza and proceed on King Street to a rally at Skygate Park on the city hall grounds. Speakers will include people who have been involved in domestic violence. The march is sponsored by Domestic Violence Clearinghouse & Legal Hotline, Catholic Charities Hawaii and the city administration. For information call coordinator Joe Bloom, 535-0159.
Kaumakapili pays tribute to gatekeepers
Kaumakapili Church will honor two "gatekeepers of the Kalihi Palama community" at its annual capital fund-raiser dinner next month.Henry Aarona, 90, who retired as church facility coordinator this year, will be recognized for his 30 years of volunteer service to the church. The church will also give tribute to the late Walter Tamashiro, founder of Tamashiro Market, for his contributions to the neighborhood.
The banquet, which will raise money for the restoration of the 91-year-old church, will be Nov. 17 at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel Monarch Room. Reservations, at $65 per person, may be made by calling the church office, 845-0908. Tickets are also being sold for corporate tables of 10. Part of the ticket price is tax deductible.
10 choirs will sing Hawaiian hymns
Ten church choirs will share favorite Hawaiian hymns in the Lokomaika'i Aha Himeni Songfest Friday night.The annual music festival of the Hawaiian Arts & Liturgical Inculturation Awareness Committee will begin at 7 p.m. at the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa, 712 N. School St. Besides individual presentations, the choirs will combine to perform three songs. The concert is free and open to the public.
Thrift shop continues sale at Star of the Sea
A going-out-of-business sale at the Star of the Sea Church Thrift Shop, 4470 Aliikoa St., will continue through Oct. 14.The stock of clothing, books, jewelry and household items, as well as the store fixtures, will be sold from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays.
The shop, which has been operated by the Kahala church for 40 years, will close to make way for construction of the Kahala Nui Retirement Facility.
Lutheran Church plans benefit concert
Baroque choral and orchestral works by two composers will be featured at the annual fall Abendimusiken Concert presented by Lutheran Church of Honolulu.The 7:30 p.m. concert Oct. 20 will be in the church at 1730 Punahou St. Cantor Carl Crosier will direct the church's choir and the Bach Chamber Orchestra in a program to include J. S. Bach's "Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D major" and "Cantata 50" and A. Vivaldi's "Concerto No. 2 for Trumpet and Oboe" and "Magnificat."
Tickets at $15 -- $12 for seniors, $10 for students -- are available at the church office, 941-2566, or at the door.
The concert will benefit Save the Foodbasket, a non-profit agency that provides a food pantry and home meal delivery for people with HIV/AIDS and their families.
