Rogers-Scott upsets
No. 3 BraziliansTodd Rogers and Punahou product Sean Scott won both their pool play matches at the FIVB Praia do Futur at Fortaleza, Brazil, yesterday.
Their run included a 20-22, 29-27, 16-14 upset of third-seeded Harley Marques and Para Ferreira of Brazil.
Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong, who both prepped at Punahou and are seeded fifth, also won both of their matches. They beat 21st-seeded Javier Bosma and Yoyi Rodriguez of Spain 21-17, 21-11 and 12th-seeded Bjorn Berg and Simon Dahl of Sweden 21-15, 21-18.
Metzger and Wong can win their pool today with a victory over 28th-seeded Jon Grydeland and Magne Kobbevik of Norway.
Miyose to hit the road to fight for U.S. team
Glenn Miyose of Waianae has been selected to represent the United States in a dual boxing contest against the Dominican Republic in Harvey, Ill., Oct. 18.Miyose, 17, fights out of the Westbrook Boxing Club and won the national under-19 championship in August.
Hawaii ranked No. 66 in list of sports schools
Hawaii will be ranked No. 66 in the upcoming issue of Sports Illustrated's rankings of "America's best sports colleges."Texas topped the list, followed by Stanford, Oklahoma and Florida. Rice was the highest-rated WAC school at No. 45.
Division II top performers
Chris Larson, Hawaii Pacific cross country: The sophomore from Grand Forks, N.D., shaved 47 seconds off his previous best time in the Brigham Young-Hawaii Invitational last Saturday. He took third place, helping the Sea Warriors put together a perfect score of 15 with a sweep of the top five spots.Chun Yi Lin, Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball: Lin became the first two-time winner of the PacWest Player of the Week award by putting together a .448 hitting percentage in the Seasiders' win over Chaminade. She leads the nation in hitting with a .488 percentage and is also 17th nationally in kills with 4.68 per game.
