points in Saturdays 42-10 win

dreardon@starbulletin.comBut Hawaii's Warriors took the concept to the extreme Saturday in their 42-10 victory over Southern Methodist at Aloha Stadium; seven different UH players scored six points apiece.
They were seniors and freshmen, quarterbacks and defensive backs, starters and reserves. Neal Gossett (51-yard pass reception), Mike Bass (7-yard run), Tim Chang (19-yard run), Kenny Patton (74-yard blocked-field-goal return), John West (8-yard run), Hyrum Peters (39-yard interception return) and Justin Ayat (six extra points) found every which way to score.
"I didn't really know that happened," Warriors coach June Jones said yesterday. "The last two wins have been great team efforts. I just know this. We're starting to play pretty good football. It's hard to believe you can have six turnovers and win by 32 points."
Once again, Hawaii had its defense to thank. The Warriors went seven consecutive quarters without allowing a touchdown until SMU's Kris Briggs scored with less than two minutes left Saturday.
UH hasn't given up a passing touchdown since the second quarter of its 35-32 loss at Brigham Young on Sept. 6, more than 10 quarters ago.
But defensive coordinator Kevin Lempa said stuffing the run has been the key in the Warriors' two consecutive wins, in which they've outscored the opposition 71-16.
"We did a couple of different things this time. (SMU) had a good tight end we were concerned about. They run a different kind of option than UTEP did," Lempa said. "But the key was still stopping the run game and the defensive tackles, the linemen up front, they controlled the line of scrimmage. It was really the D-line that should get the credit for the way we played against the run. We had a couple tough positions there where if they scored it could have changed the game."
Defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga gets better every game, and on Saturday he led UH with nine tackles and forced a fumble when he wasn't creating opportunities for his teammates to make plays.
The Warriors got a season-high five sacks - they also spread the wealth in that area, with Pisa Tinoisamoa, Travis LaBoy, Houston Ala, La'anui Correa and Josiah Cravalho bagging one each.
The constant harassment of SMU freshman quarterback Tate Wallis helped Hawaii cornerback Patton, a true freshman, ease into his first start.
"He played well, he covered well," Lempa said. "He had a chance a couple times, if he looked back for the ball he might have had some interceptions, but he was so concerned about being in good position. He's young, he's just out of high school. He'll get better and better because he's smart, he's aggressive and he's a very talented athlete."
Patton played for Abraham Elimimian, who missed the game with a pulled hamstring. Elimimian might be ready to play at Boise State on Saturday, giving the Warriors more depth at a critical position.
Also, safety Leonard Peters, out the first three games with abdominal injuries, played several series Saturday.
The Warriors will need all their defenders against the Broncos, even though BSU will be without starting quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie; B.J. Rhode passed for five touchdowns in Boise State's 63-38 victory over Utah State on Saturday. UH was a 112-point underdog on the Stardust line last night.
"It's a big challenge. I know they can move the ball offensively," UH quarterback Chang said.
The Warriors' offense seems to be coming out of its doldrums in time. Although the offense was responsible for five of the six turnovers, Chang played much better than in the last two games. He completed 15 of 29 passes for 246 yards and a touchdown; he was intercepted once.
He was impressive on a 78-yard drive to open the second half, and regained the confidence of fans and teammates with a 19-yard touchdown run that ended with a goal-line collision with two SMU defenders.
"We kept the chains moving, kept the defense off the field a little bit, gave them a little bit of a rest," Chang said.
