UH speeds past WAC
foes at Stanford

Five weeks into the season, the UH cross country team finally got to see up close how it stacks up with the rest of the teams in the Western Athletic Conference.

The Wahine placed behind four other teams at the Stanford Invitational yesterday, but none of them were WAC teams. Stanford won the meet, followed by Wisconsin, Purdue, Montana and Hawaii. Southern Methodist, excpected to be Hawaii's toughest challenge for the conference title, finished sixth, six points behind the Wahine.

"We knew SMU would be strong," Hawaii coach Carmyn James said. "It was a little bit of a preview and I am extremely pleased with where we are right now."

Although the Mustangs had the two runners finish in the top five -- Karin van Rooyen in third and Emily Field in fifth -- the Wahine were stronger at the back end of their lineup.

Victoria Chang, who started her career at Stanford, ran a 14:37 to finish eighth overall on the flat 4K course and Hanna Bremler finished 11th, but it was Hawaii's next three finishers who made the difference.

Sophomore Alethe West and senior Jennifer Crumley ran together and placed 38th and 39th while Robin McRobbie finished 62nd. They made up the difference by beating SMU's last scorer, Amanda Henkes, who finished 79th.

HPU men perfect: At Laie, the Hawaii Pacific men's cross country team achieved the first of its goals for the season, sweeping the top five spots to win the Brigham Young-Hawaii cross country meet at Laie yesterday.

Hawaii Pacific coach Vien Schwinn asked Christian Madsen and Abdeslam Naji to slow down and run with Chris Larsen and the team's slower runners. Although Madson and Naji broke free to take the race, the strategy allowed Larson, Shadreck Nabea and Robert Tyler to all beat BYUH's Tom Jordan to the tape. Tyler was the last Sea Warrior across the line, beating Jordan by 31 seconds to give HPU the sweep and a perfect score of 15 points.

HPU coach Vien Schwinn believes it is the first time that an NCAA cross country team took the first five spots in a race.

Kusutani wins: With No. 1 runner Nina Christensen out because of illness, HPU's Sayuri Kusutani won her second race of the season to propel the Sea Warriors to another win.

Kusutani finished in 18:19, beating teammate Janine Brown by 35 seconds.

Seasiders slip in new pool

The Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo team lost its first match in its new pool in Laie yesterday, falling in an exhibition to the Hawaiian Masters 12-9.

Christian Janson and BYUH assistant coach Doug Cole combined for seven goals for the Hawaiian Masters. Vanja Kalabic led the Seasiders with three.

Warriors invade QB Club

Hawaii football coaches Vantz SIngletary and Tyson Helton and Kamehameha coach Kanani Souza will speak tomorrow at the Quarterback Club.

The club will honor BYUH volleyball player Weng Yu Chuan and Kapolei football coach Darren Hernandez as its sports persons of the month.

Lunch begins at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda restaurant with the program to follow at noon.

See SMU lose again at Na Koa Luncheon

Hawaii football coaches June Jones and Rich Miano will review yesterday's win, complete with game film, at tomorrow's Na Koa Luncheon at the All-Star Cafe.

Lunch is open to the public at 11:30 a.m. and costs $12.
