Prayers for peace will be offered at events at 24 Catholic parishes which will be stops in the Pilgrim Virgin Statue Tour being staged here next month.

A statue of Our Lady of Fatima will be displayed at each church during the devotions, sponsored by the St. Michael Center for the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Honolulu Catholic lay organization.

A 5 p.m. service Monday at St. Augustine Church in Waikiki will initiate the tour on Oahu.

The statue will also be taken to Hawaii, Maui, Kauai and Molokai churches.

The Indiana-based tour organization has used the statue of Christ's mother as the focus for devotions in tours around the country for 55 years.

The statue depicts a 1917 apparition of Mary in Fatima, Portugal.

"When the Blessed Mother appeared to the three children at Fatima, she essentially asked for people to pray for peace, peace in our families, the church and in our countries," said Thomas Pereira, St. Michael Center director. "The Fatima message teaches us that true peace can only come from trust and reconciliation with God and neighbor."

Information on the schedule of prayer events at other parishes is available by calling the St. Michael Center, 943-7088, or viewing its Web site at www.smcenter.org.
