Respect Life Month to oppose abortion
A procession and Catholic religious service next Saturday will combine veneration of Mary, the mother of Jesus, with a demonstration against abortion.The annual World Rosary Day and Respect Life Month will begin at 1:45 p.m. at St. Patrick Church, 1124 7th Ave. A 3 p.m. Mass will follow the procession, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and recitation of the Rosary and Divine Mercy Chaplet. It is sponsored by the Honolulu diocesan Respect Life office and a Catholic lay organization, the Reparation to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Association.
Kamehameha holds forum on Hoomana
"Hoomana, the Interface of Hawaiian Culture and Christianity" will be explored in a panel discussion Monday sponsored by Kamehameha Schools.Speakers at the 7 p.m. forum will be the Rev. Darrow Aiona of St. Mark's Church; John Lake, kumu hula and chanter; the Rev. Kimo Merseberg of Kawaiahao Church; the Rev. Lei Recca of Ke Alaula o ka Malamalama Church and Hokulani Holt-Padilla of Maui Culture and Arts Center. The Rev. Kordell Kekoa, Kamehameha chaplain, will host the event, with Randie K. Fong, director of the performing arts department, as moderator.
The format will be geared toward broadening understanding rather than drawing conclusions, according to an announcement.
The event at the Keelikolani Performing Arts Center on the Kapalama school campus is open to the public. It is the first in a series to be presented by the center.
Jewish Simchat Torah weekend events set
Hawaii Jews are celebrating Simchat Torah this weekend, a holiday that marks the completion of the annual cycle of readings from Mosaic law and beginning of a new cycle.The holiday has a festive tone in contrast with the solemnity of Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur. It is a tradition to give children candy and fruit to affirm that "the commandments of the Lord are sweeter than honey," said Pearl Krasnjansky of Chabad of Hawaii.
Events planned include:
>> Chabad of Hawaii Center, 3430 E. Manoa Road 7:30 p.m. today. There will be communal dancing and refreshments.
>> Congregation Sof Ma'arav, 2500 Pali Highway, 6:30 p.m. today. The Israeli Folk Dancers troupe will lead the dancing.
>> Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway. There will be a 7 p.m. family service today and a 10 a.m. Traditional service tomorrow.
St. Andrews presents choral evensong Oct. 6
The music of Bach, Vierne and other composers will be presented in the Organ Recital and Choral Evensong Oct. 6 at St. Andrew's Cathedral.The 7:30 p.m. concert by the Cathedral Choir directed by Arlan Sunnarborg is open to the public, with offerings accepted.
"O Strength and Stay" by Thiman and "Magnificat" and "Nunc dimittis in B flat" by Stanford will be performed by the choir. Organ music by Sunnarborg will include "Prelude and Fugue in B minor" by Bach and the finale from Vierne's "Organ Symphony No. 1."
The evensong is part of an ongoing monthly series by cathedral musicians and singers.
Shinto thanksgiving set at Izumo Taisha
A traditional Shinto autumn thanksgiving service will be held Oct. 6 at the Izumo Taisha Mission.It will be the 96th annual Omatsuri festival at the historic shrine at 215 N. Kukui St. The day's events will begin with a 3 p.m. service in which members carry a Mikoshi -- portable shrine -- in a procession. The Rev. Daiya Amano will lead prayers expressing gratitude for blessings bestowed on families, businesses and the nation.
A program of music and dance will follow the religious service.
Entertainment will be presented by Mochimaki, Hanayagi Ryu Dancers, Ryukyu Buyo by Nakasone Ryubu Kenkyusho and Hawaii Matsuri Taiko Group. The Aiko Music Studio will lead karaoke singing.
The event is open to the public.
