Sea Warriors
subdue Vulcans

After a rocky start, the Hawaii Pacific women's volleyball team came back to defeat UH-Hilo 23-30, 30-25, 30-20, 30-24 Wednesday at the Neal Blaisdell Center.

HPU senior middle blocker Susy Garbelotti had 18 kills and 13 digs and four blocks.

HPU freshman outside hitter Ashley Elliazar picked up her third career double-double with 12 kills and a career-high 17 digs. In game two, Elliazar had three back-to-back service aces that shifted the momentum in HPU's favor.

UH-Hilo's Sara Pilgreen, who shared PacWest Player of the Week honors with HPU's Garbelotti last week, had a match-high 20 kills and 12 digs. Pilgreen committed only two errors in 54 swings, and had three blocks.

HPU is 3-0 in the PacWest and 8-3 overall, while UH-Hilo is 1-2 in the conference and 5-9 overall. Hilo is staying on Oahu to play Chaminade tonight.

"ChampionChip" to be used at prep meet

The Honolulu Marathon Cross Country Invitational tomorrow at Central Oahu Regional Park will be a high-tech affair.

The marathon will sponsor computer timing by Timers Plus and use of the "ChampionChip."

It has been used in the last two Honolulu Marathons but will be used in a local cross country race for only the third time.

Division II top performers

>> Nina Christensen, Hawaii Pacific cross country: The junior from Frederickssund, Denmark, returned to the front of the pack at the University of Hawaii Big Wave Invitational on Saturday, beating 111 runners to the tape at Kualoa Ranch. Christensen came in second in her previous race but beat UH's Victoria Chang and other NCAA Division I runners from UCLA, Oklahoma State and San Diego State.

>> Alexsander Stankovic, Brigham Young-Hawaii water polo: The freshman goalie from Belgrade, Yugoslavia, turned away 20 shots to help the Seasiders beat Chaminade 11-8 last Friday. The Silverswords unleashed 29 shots to BYUH's 19, but Stankovic made that stat meaningless with his play.

>> Kaala Lo, Brigham Young-Hawaii volleyball: It doesn't hurt that her Seasiders are leading the country in kills, but the sophomore from Mililani has been the one to make it so. She dished out 56 assists against Montana State-Billings last week and is second in the nation in that stat.
