Auditions set for singers
and dancers roarin
to star in Lion KingDisney's "The Lion King," which plays to sold-out houses nightly on Broadway, is holding an open call for singers and dancers to join the company.
Auditions for singers will take place Oct. 5 at the University of Hawaii Music Department, 2411 Dole St., Room 36. Audition sign-ins begin at 9:30 a.m., with auditions starting at 10 a.m.
Auditioners must sign in by noon to be guaranteed a spot and must be prepared to wait. Singers are described as "strong, dynamic pop, rock or gospel singers who move very well for various roles including the African lions Simba and Nala and all ensemble roles." Acting ability is a must for this show.
Singers are asked to bring an up-tempo pop, rock or gospel song that shows off voice and range -- no musical theater tunes. The auditions will provide an accompanist. Auditioners are asked to bring a photo and resume stapled together, or a recent photo and list of performance experience.
"The Lion King" is looking for adults ages 18 and up of all cultural backgrounds, as well as youngsters ages 8 to 12.
The open call for dancers will be held Oct. 8 for females and Oct. 9 for males. Sign-up is at Ballet Hawaii's studio in the Dole Cannery from 9 a.m., with warm-up by 9:30 a.m. when auditions begin. Sign-in must be no later than 9:30 a.m.
"The Lion King" is looking for strong dancers with a modern dance background, from late teens to early 30s in age.
Some male dancers require acrobatic skills. Flat jazz shoes or bare feet are required, with dancers of all backgrounds encouraged to attend this call.
Dancers may be asked to sing, so one contemporary pop, rock or gospel song should be prepared; again, no musical theater songs. Music should be brought with the auditioner. A photo and resume are requested.
