Iolani senior Hong Zhe Sun and Punahou junior Noa Sakamoto have been named to the U.S. Junior National Swimming Team.

The junior national team will assemble for a camp at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in October and will compete in an international competition in Australia in January.

Sun, who immigrated to the U.S. from China, met the national team's qualifying standards last year, but couldn't join the program because he wasn't a U.S. citizen. He was granted citizenship last May and qualified for the team in the 100- and 200-yard butterfly.

Sun set a meet record in the 100-yard butterfly and won the 100 backstroke at last season's state championships. Sakamoto finished second in the 200 freestyle and swam on the Buffanblu's winning 400 freestyle relay team.

Exit polls: St. Louis didn't drop completely off the national radar after last Saturday's 31-21 loss to top-ranked De La Salle.

The Crusaders fell from number 10 to 43 in this week's Student Sports Fab 50 rankings and dropped from third to 11th in the West region rankings.

Kahuku, which lost to Long Beach Poly 42-16, dropped out of the regional rankings.

De La Salle, winner of 127 straight games, retained its top ranking and Poly remains third. Parkview of Lilburn, Ga., is second.

The Tony Poll, which takes the average of the major national polls, rated St. Louis 14th and Kahuku 15th in the West region.

More mainland flavor: Montgomery (Calif.) won the varsity girls race and Eisenhower (Wash.) claimed the varsity boys title at the fourth annual Iolani Cross Country Invitational last Saturday at Kualoa Ranch.

Ruth Graham of Henry Gunn (Calif.) finished first in the varsity girls race with a time of 19 minutes, 48.4 seconds.

Iolani's Nicole Anderson came in sixth to lead local runners. Punahou was the top local girls team in the meet, finishing third.

Carl Moe of Auburn (Calif.) won the boys varsity race in 16:18.5. Maui's Nick Jachowski came in 16th.

Eisenhower placed three runners in the top 10 to claim the team title.

Iolani finished ninth to lead the Hawaii entrants.

Kari Tanimoto of Pearl City finished first in the two-mile girls race in Saturday's OIA preseason meet hosted by Mililani. Tanimoto finished with a time of 11:50. Ryan Orme of Kahuku won the three-mile boys race in 16:29.

Keep on rolling: The Oahu Interscholastic Association bowling season began yesterday with Western Division matches at Aiea Bowl.

The OIA East begins play today at Waialae Bowl.

Regular-season matches start at 2:30 p.m.

The OIA individual championships are set for Oct. 31. The team titles will be decided Nov. 5 at Schofield Bowl.
