Abdallah, Sekiya
tops in Maui Marathon


Kalid Abdallah ran to victory in the 32nd annual Maui Marathon yesterday.

Abdallah, 23, of the Bay Area in California, finished with a time of 2 hours, 19 minutes, 50 seconds.

Greg Wenneborg of Tucson, Ariz., the winner of the two previous Maui Marathons, finished second in 2:27:41.

The first woman finisher was Akiko Sekiya of Japan in 2:57:39, followed by Akiko Kobayashi, also of Japan, in 3:05:52.

Metzger, Wong win at Queen's Beach

Stein Metzger and Kevin Wong added $600 to their professional earnings yesterday when they teamed up to beat Scott Wong and Dan Mintz for the men's title in the Riggers Beach Volleyball Classic at Queen's Beach yesterday.

Tanya Fuamatu teamed up with Heidi Illustre to win the $400 women's first prize.

Otsuji clinches HSCA series title

Marvin Otsuji of Kauai captained Kamakakoa to a first-place finish in Saturday's Kendall Pacific Challenge, a 28-mile sailing canoe race from Nawiliwili Harbor to Waimea Beach on Kauai.

The victory clinched the Aston Race Series title for Otsuji, who edged Oahu's Mike Kincaid for the overall top honors in the Hawaiian Sailing Canoe Association competition.

Kincaid, captain of Kahiau, finished a close second with Kauai's Sharky Aguilar third.

Stanley collects 8 kills in loss

Hawaii's Clay Stanley had 12 points on eight kills, two blocks and two aces, but the U.S. men's national volleyball team lost to Italy 25-19, 26-24, 21-25, 25-21 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

The match was a tune-up for the World Championships.

Cambra fastest through surf and sand

Anthony Cambra came out of the water third, but passed Maria Krawciw and Baxter Cepeda to win the Surf and Sand Biathlon at Kailua yesterday.

Cambra's time was 1 hour, 2 minutes, 6.9 seconds. He beat Keith Daniel by 3:47.

Krawciw, 16, won the women's race and was third overall.

Irons advances in Figueira Pro

Kauai's Andy Irons handily defeated Brazil's Neco Padaratz in the third round of the Figueira Pro yesterday in Portugal.

Irons is the Association of Surfing Professionals World Tour ratings leader.

Oahu's Kalani Robb also advanced to the next round by edging Pat O'Connell, while fellow Hawaii surfer Shane Dorian was eliminated in a loss to Australia's Joel Parkinson.
