Benchmarks let
Lutheran students know
what is expected

Student Q&A

By Travis Watanabe
Lutheran High School

Along University Avenue, before the onramp to the freeway, is the Lutheran High School of Hawaii. During the 2000-2001 school year, Lutheran High was reaccredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

A set of benchmarks, the Expected Schoolwide Learning Results, were part of the accreditation process and self-study, a 200-page document prepared by the faculty, board, parents and students.

Senior Sean Corpuz, Student Congress president, said, "The ESLRs tell what is expected of the students, and because of this the students have no excuse to be anything other that what is expected of them."

According to the ESLRs, Lutheran High School will prepare its students to be:

>> Spiritual individuals who know the message of Jesus.

>> Academic individuals who are critical thinkers, communicate effectively, work independently and have a background for higher education and/or vocational competence.

>> Physical individuals who recognize a responsibility to develop sound mental, physical and emotional health.

>> Aesthetically aware individuals who exhibit an understanding of fine arts and other cultural areas.

>> Socially aware individuals who develop wholesome social relationships, respect authority and consider the feelings and rights of others.

>> Emotionally sound individuals who develop self-respect and a healthy self-image.

How do you cope with anger?

Compiled by Joshua Jay and Chris Wittig

Yuichi Nakao
Senior
"I either go to sleep, talk about it or go running. The best way is to face your problems and overcome them, but if you can't face them, sleeping works."

Christina Toyama
Senior
"I pray or go running."

Matt Uffmann
Sophomore
"I sing lullabies in my head. I think of flowers and prairie dogs."

Sean Corpuz
Senior
"Depends on what type of anger. If it's my brothers, I fight with them. But I avoid any other type of anger because no one is as close to me as my brothers."

Michelle Muromachi
Senior
"I talk to people and get their advice, or I pray."

Chase Morrill
Freshman
"I write down how I'm feeling on a piece of paper, because it's easier to express yourself on paper than talk about it."

Sean Yoshioka
Senior
"I sleep on it and then confront it later, because lots of times you find what you were mad about was stupid and unimportant."

Kyle McCormick
Junior
"I write poems, and I concentrate on the positive things in my life."

Karen Lee
Freshman
"I talk about my problems and complain to other people."

Amani Evensen
Junior
"I don't get angry often because, if I do, I try to realize that trying to handle the problem while angry won't solve anything."

Candice Chikamoto
Freshman
"I think it over and think of something better."

Chelsea de la Cruz
Freshman
"I talk about what I'm angry about with my friends."
