Professional ladies
rooting for Mazie?

IT's a woman's world, or so the Professional Women's Network is hoping. With Linda Lingle a virtual shoo-in as the GOP nominee in the upcoming governorship race, the networking ladies would seem to be rooting for her Democratic opponent, Mazie Hirono, in Saturday's primary. That's because the speaker for their Sept. 26 membership luncheon at the Hale Koa Hotel is listed as "Gubernatorial Winner of the Democratic Party." ... And Helen Thomas, the venerable White House correspondent for UPI when it existed and now a columnist for Hearst, will be guest speaker Monday at the Honolulu Community-Media Council, Pacific Basin Communications and the East West Center at the Pacific Club ...

Distaff of life

THE females are also well represented in the artistic community. On Oct. 4 at the Hawaii Theatre you can see "Women of Song, Women of Dance," featuring some of Hawaii's top female singers both young (Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom) and old (Aunty Genoa Keawe) with a host of other women singers and dancers. To his credit, the tribute to the ladies was the brainchild of Tony Conjugacion ... When I saw "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)" in London two years ago, the cast consisted of the three men who wrote it. Now The Åctors Group has opened the very funny show at the Yellow Brick Theater on Keawe Street and young director Devon Leigh elected to mix it up a bit. The cast now consists of two men and four women. Due to the nearness of cast to audience in the local production, some interaction with audience members takes place -- at one point I had Ophelia (or somebody) plop down in my lap. I'm not complaining, mind you, but go forewarned. It plays Thursdays through Saturday nights with Sunday matinees ...

WHILE I didn't see it, one of the first "Hawaii Five-O" episodes to air back in its premiere season, "Tiger by the Tail," aired locally this week. I had a nice role in it, explaining to Jack Lord and Jim MacArthur about how the lines on a machine shows that the voice was that of Sal Mineo, who was guest star on the show. You might not have recognized me since I was clean-shaven back in those days ...

Boys at Roy's

THERE was a guest chef dinner at Roy's the other night featuring Nobu Matsuhisa, Yuji Wakiya (from Japan's Turandot restaurant and a successful Iron Chef challenger on TV), Alan Wong and Roy Yamaguchi. Another guest chef dinner is slated for Oct. 3 with Ron Siegel, Hiroshi Fukui and Yamaguchi. Siegel was the first American chef to beat an "Iron Chef" on the popular Japanese cooking show ...

Bye-bye, Dave

I'M off on vacation, heading back to England and Ireland. And for those who grouse, "He's always on vacation," this is the first time this year I've managed to get away. My Sunday column, "The Week That Was," will continue, carrying a variety of items selected from columns of that week throughout the past three decades-plus years. I'll be back in this slot on Oct. 28 ...
