Six Hawaii teachers credited their students for their success yesterday at the Department of Education's 2003 Teachers of the Year luncheon at the Hale Koa Hotel. Teachers credit students

gsuzuki@starbulletin.comGail Teshima, a Farrington High School art teacher and the Honolulu District Teacher of the Year, recalled working with a special-education student who later earned accolades for his artwork. The student attended the Art Institute of Chicago and after studying abroad in South America, brought back emeralds for his family and a stuffed piranha for Teshima.
Marlene Frances Bourke-Faustina, an energetic music and chorus teacher from Waianae Intermediate School, said, "I believe teaching begins in the heart."
This is Bourke-Faustina's second time as the Leeward District Teacher of the Year.
Each honoree will receive $500 from the Polynesian Cultural Center, a co-sponsor for the award. The teachers also receive the use a new car for a year from the Hawaii Volkswagen Dealers Association; Nissan Hawaii; TheoDavies Big Island Honda; Servco Toyota; Subaru of Hawaii; Hawaii Mitsubishi; and the Hawaii Automobile Dealers Association, another co-sponsor.
The State Teacher of the Year, chosen by a committee of educators and community members, will be named at the Oct. 17 Board of Education meeting at Stevenson Middle School.
